Beyond Guinness: Explore Irish Brews at McGonigal's

Barrington's McGonigal's bar manager recommends Irish brews for St. Pat's Day, Celtic Fest.

Once upon a time, green beer (perhaps Miller with green dye) was all the rage for St. Patrick's Day. Today, Guinness is likely the most popular Irish brew.

But there are others that may please your taste buds more. Barrington Patch stopped by McGonigal's Pub in Barrington and spoke to manager Ismini Walsh (and with a name like Walsh you can bet she knows about Irish brews).

Walsh's recommendations:

  • Smithwicks Irish Ale-- pronounced Smithicks (no w)-- a lighter red ale from Ireland.
  • Harp Irish Lager--a good choice for lager lovers. Harp is also a good mixer with Guinness for Black and Tans. Walsh suggests half and half.
  • Magner's Irish Cider-- for those with a sweet tooth, and it can be served over ice. Walsh says it's like apple juice.

Don't forget to stop by Celtic Fest which runs March 14-17 in downtown Barrington.
