Boys’ Basketball Loses to Fremd

Barrington Broncos kicked off “Think Pink” night with a tough loss to conference foe Fremd Vikings, 53-41.

The BarringtonBroncos (4-2, 0-1) entered Friday's "Think Pink" night with high hopes after winning the Mundelein Thanksgiving Tournament.  The energy was buzzing as this night's game had a little more significance than just a regular game it seemed.

Not only was this a night for wearing pink and supporting a great cause, the Susan G. Koman fund for cancer, but the Fremd Vikings (3-2, 1-0), a conference rival and the reigning MSL-W conference champions, would make for an exciting evening.

The game started out well for the Broncos as they stormed out to a 14-9 first quarter lead on the strong individual effort of senior forward Greg Gerrard.  Gerrard scored 10 points in the opening quarter and ended the night with a team high 18 points.

"I thought I started the game really strong and got out quick which was nice," Gerrard, the Mundelein Tournament's most valuable player said of his first quarter performance.

The second quarter began with Barrington adding to the Fremd deficit but by the midway point of the frame the Vikings found their first lead on the hot shooting of Zach Monoghan.  Monoghanended the half with10 points and ended his night offensively with a game high 22 points.

The Vikings and Barrington basically exchanged points the remainder of the half as the Broncos slipped to the locker room with a 24-23 advantage.

Unfortunately for the Broncos the second half started in eerie fashion as Fremd was able to capitalize on the Bronco miscues on three straight offensive series.

"The third quarter killed us.  We played them even other than that third," Gerrard said.  "We just weren't able to get out of the whole we dug for ourselves."

The Broncos were able to break the Fremd scoring surge that was being displayed, if only momentarily, when Owen Prunskiswas able to hit both free throws after a very tough foul that sent him to the ground viciously.  Prunskis ended the night with seven points.

"(Prunskis and Gerrard) are two kids who have definitely paid the price in the weight room and are able to compete in our league against the big physical teams, Barrington's coach Tucker said of his senior players.  "They are our captains for a reason and they play their hearts out."

A continued combination of costly turnovers and missed shots saw Barrington fall behind by as much as 10 points as Fremd went on a 10-2 run to end the quarter on the hot shooting of the Vikings' Jim Scharfe and Monoghan.  Scharfe ended the night with eight points and helped give Fremd a 41-31 lead entering the final quarter.

"They just out executed us.  We had too many breakdowns defensively and we didn't execute our game plan," Tucker said of Barrington's disappointing third quarter.  "We were pretty sloppy with the ball tonight and we didn't have our best shooting night.  When you don't shoot well and turn the ball over as much as we did that's a pretty bad formula."

The fourth quarter saw the two teams exchange points but no real ground was made either way as Fremd's senior guard Quinton Brown started the quarter with three straight baskets that kept the game close.  Brown ended the night with 10 points.

The Vikings ended the game with a 53-41 victory.

"More people need to get involved," Tucker said.  "We need to execute as a team better."
