Broncos Basketball Team Loses Season Opener
Carmel defeats Barrington 74-65 to kick-off the season and the Mundelien Tournament, for both teams.
On Monday, the 2010-2011 basketball season started, but not exactly the way the Broncos would have liked. A physical Carmel team capitalized on Bronco errors and inexperience, earning their first victory of the year. New Corsairs coach Tim Bowen also scored a win at his Carmel debut.
"We have a lot of guys out there without much court experience and I think it showed," Barrington's coach Bryan Tucker said. "It looked like our first game."
The game began physical as both teams utilized defense to disrupt the offensive flow for their opponent. The two teams continued relying on defense to try and spark the offense through out the first half. Barrington attempted to enter the intermission with the lead, however, a costly last second turnover allowed the Corsairs to tie the game at 25 just before halftime.
The second half started well for the Broncos, as good ball movement opened up a dunk opportunity for forward John Schneider and allowed Barrington to retake the lead. Unfortunately for the Broncos, it was the last time they would have the lead as the Corsairs were able to break Barrington's full court press multiple times for easy lay-ups.
"We got a couple of turnovers out of the press and we tried to continue to roll with it," Tucker said of the press that seemed ineffective. "We found ourselves chasing and they were able to break it (the full court press)."
Costly Barrington mental lapses and turnovers, combined with a Bronco full court press that was rendered useless by Carmel's good ball movement, helped spark the Corsairs on a 15-3 run. Carmel was led by forward Dan Feld's double-double. Feld scored 22 of his game high 28 points in the second half and added 18 rebounds.
After the Corsairs pushed their lead to 10 points, at 40-30, the Broncos rallied back on sophomore guard Brad Zaumseil who was fouled on a lay-up out of a timeout. Zaumseil's three-point play capped a run that pulled Barrington to with in eight, at 47-39. Zaumseil led all Barrington scorers with 19 points.
Carmel quickly stopped the Barrington momentum slightly before the end of the third quarter with a defensive effort from forward Dan Mooney who was rewarded with his hustle by making a three pointer that pushed the Corsairs lead back to 51-39. Mooney ended the night with 20 points.
Barrington's hard-luck night continued as they committed a turnover to begin the fourth but it was guard Greg Gerrard's three pointer that helped build up some built up momentum and cut the Corsairs' lead to less than ten. Gerrard ended the game with 11 points.
Barrington continued to chip into the deficit with the help of Bronco guard Tyler Weathered's 14 points, but they were unable to sustain the late run as turnovers, costly missed shots and fouls derailed the rally that saw the Broncos pull to with in three points late in the fourth.
Carmel ended the game on a 9-2 run that essentially ended any hopes for a Bronco dramatic season open comeback as the Corsairs won 74-65.
"We missed some key free throws, turned the ball over and yet we still had a chance to win," Coach Tucker said following the game. "We had a tough time tonight, they are just part of the process, growing pains."
