Broncos’ Gymnastics Trying to Stay Balanced

Despite having some gymnasts with limited experience, the Broncos are right where the coach was expecting them to be.

After the Broncos eleventh place at last year’s MSL conference meet, Barrington’s coach Rob DaFano knew there would be some rebuilding.

It is still very early in the season for Barrington gymnastics, as they have only competed in two meets, but Coach DeFano sees the team making improvements and feels the squad is right where they should be heading out of spring break.

“There has been some real nice improvement from our last meet (against Stevenson),” DeFano said after the team’s dual meet with Palatine and Schaumburg.  “We have some young guys competing out here.”

“These guys are fighting back after we threw them right into the fire,” DeFano went on to say. “Some of these guys have only been in here for 12 to 15 days of practice and were never gymnast before this.”

It’s not all inexperience as the coaches have been relying heavily on some of his seniors to help provide the guidance for the squad.

Danny Cameron (senior), Tyler Mitchell (senior), and Steve Abbott (senior) have all been key to some of the growth that has occurred since the team opened the season against Stevenson.

“They have been helping the team a lot,” Barrington’s coach said.  “They have leadership and experience and that means so much (as a gymnast).”

The dual meet on March 16 against the Saxons and the Pirates was the last time the Broncos will be at home as Barrington will spend nearly a month participating in away meets.  Barrington’s last home meet will be the Barrington Invite on Monday, April 18.  The Invite will be a showcase for some of the area’s most talented gymnast but will also be senior night for the Broncos.

The Broncos next meet is Wednesday, March 30, at MSL-West opponent Hoffman Estates at 6:00 p.m.  Barrington will follow that up with a dual meet against fellow divisional foe Conant, also at 6:00 p.m.  The Cougars, the 2010 MSL conference champs, will be hosting the Broncos and MSL Conference crossover rival, Rolling Meadows (finished eigth at last year’s MSL Conference Meet) and will be a  good mid-season test.
