Broncos’ Three Point Shooting Sink Saxons

Barrington’s bevy of three pointers helps them to a 64-39 victory over MSL-W foe Schaumburg.

On Friday, Jan. 7,  the Broncos won their heated MSL West conference game against Schaumburg thanks to a hot display of three-point shooting throughout the game.

Barrington’s senior guard Tyler Weathered helped the Broncos to a quick 9-4 lead when he hit two of the team’s first three field goals, all from behind the arc.  Weathered’s consecutive three’s was only the start for the guard as he ended 5 of 5 from three land.

“Once I get in a rhythm, it’s a little easier to get the shot going; I then got some confidence,” Weathered said of his three point success.  “I just got good looks and wanted to knock them down.”

“[The Team] executed and [Weathered] finished it,” Barrington Coach Bryan Tucker said of Weathered’s performance.  “He was hot and we thought there were things we could take advantage of and get him loose on the arc.

After ending the first period’s hot shooting, that saw Barrington (11-6, 2-2) posted to a 17-8 early lead, the Broncos went ice cold to start the second and didn’t hit a field for nearly 5 minutes.  The missed field goals saw the Saxons pull to with-in three points after their 6-0 run, sparked by senior guard Javon McDonald. McDonald ended with a team high 15 points.

But that was a close as Schaumburg (6-8, 2-2) would get the rest of the night as Weathered would find space behind the three point line again and led Barrington’s 12-2 run to end the quarter with three consecutive deep ones, with the last one rattling in thanks to the shooters bounce.  Weathered’s only other points were thanks to the technical foul Saxon head coach Matt Walsh would receive in the third quarter.   Weathered’s 17 points would lead all scorers.

As a team the Broncos would finish 8 of 12 from the three point line and had contributions from four different players in route to Barrington’s 75-percent shooting success.  Sophomore guard Brad Zaumseil kicked of the game and spate of three pointers.  Zaumseil may have only contributed 4 points but his pesky defense garnered four steals and he racked up three rebounds.

“We had some kids catch fire tonight,” Tucker said.  “We were getting more comfortable moving off the ball and the kids are doing a better job not putting the ball on the floor and going one-on-one; they’re letting the offense work and getting themselves open shots.”

“We were pretty patient offensively,” Weathered said agreeing with his coach on how the team managed 8 of 12 from behind the three point line.  “We made a lot of cuts, screened well, and that got us open; we just looked for the open guy.”

Coming out of halftime leading 29-16 the two teams would essential exchange baskets the entire period.  Barrington’s junior forward John Schneider poured in seven of his 8 points for the night and kept the Saxons from making any ground as their deficit remained 15, finishing the third 46-31.

The Saxons hope for a late comeback fizzled thanks to Barrington’s 16-5 run to start the period helping them to their largest lead of the night at 26.   The 62-36 lead was sparked by junior forward Mark Bennett’s 7 point spurt during the stretch, highlighted by a deep three.  Bennett’s scored 14 for the night and was one of three Broncos in double figures.

Senior guard Greg Gerrard was the other Barrington player scoring double digits.  Gerrard’s 11 during the game (also hitting a three) helped the Broncos to a 64-39 victory, and the first time the guard has scored double figures since his Dec. 14 injury at Jacobs.

“The scoring wasn’t really a big deal,” Gerrard said post game.  “I’m just glad to be getting back on the court and really being able to play for an extended period of time.”

This is only the second game back for Gerrard (played Jan. 4 against Elk Grove) and is eager to get back to 100 percent.  Gerrard is also looking forward to Barrington’s next match-up against Huntley on Saturday, Jan. 8.  A quick turnaround for the Broncos, this rematch from the Jacobs Holiday Tournament semifinal game starts at 7:00 p.m. and saw Gerrard watching from the sidelines as his team fell 52-50.

“I can’t wait for Huntley,” Gerrard said.  “It was tough to watch that one from the bench.”

The MSL-W win for the Broncos place them in a divisional second place log jam as they are tied with the Saxons and Palatine.  All three teams are looking up at Fremd (who beat last place Hoffman Estates) and Conant (lost to Palatine).
