Patch Flash: Deal Paves Way for Lake Michigan Offshore Wind Farms

Chicagoland news to talk about: Man hit by Metra train in Morton Grove.

The Obama administration and five states, including Illinois, have reached an agreement to speed up approval of offshore wind farms in the Great Lakes, which have been delayed by cost concerns and public opposition. Under the deal, state and federal agencies will craft a blueprint for speeding regulatory review of proposed wind farms without sacrificing environmental and safety standards. Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania signed the agreement. llinois Gov. Pat Quinn said developing offshore wind energy would "promote economic development and create jobs, while reducing our dependence on foreign energy sources."

A bill that would strengthen current anti-bullying protections in Illinois has passed out the Illinois General Assembly. Bill HB 5290, introduced by lesbian state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, is headed to the Illinois Senate. The bill is not directly related to LGBT issues. Rather, it adds to the current code to create a model bullying prevention policies for schools for 2013. The current school code does contain LGBT anti-bullying protections.

In Illinois, legislators can personally award scholarships to state universities – sometimes to friends, donors and political allies. For a century, each Illinois legislator has had the power to hand out a few scholarships every year without regard to students' needs or qualifications. In recent years, a state lawmaker helped a political backer's four children with $94,000 worth of tuition waivers. Another gave a scholarship to the son of a Chicago alderman. Now, after the failure of repeated efforts to end the $13.5 million-a-year program, opponents are making a new push to eliminate the waivers as Illinois officials try again to clean up the state's image after two consecutive governors wound up in prison.

As the Supreme Court discussed the legality of the Affordable Care Act this week, Catholics gathered in Northbrook to discuss its ramifications to their faith.

At issue is the clash between the Catholic Church’s stance on contraception and one of the guidelines of the act championed by President Obama: a provision that would require health insurance providers to cover contraception and sterilization procedures at no cost to the patient. The provision does not exempt employers with a religious affiliation who hire people with diverse religious backgrounds — like the hundreds of schools and hospitals run by the Catholic Church nationwide.

A pedestrian was killed by a train about 8 p.m., Thursday evening, near the Morton Grove Metra station, according to Metra spokesperson Tom Miller. Miller had few details and did not know the victim's identity, but Commander Paul Yaras of the Morton Grove Police Department said the victim was a male, and was walking on the tracks south of the station.

In addition to its 30th year anniversary in February, The Book Stall at Chestnut Court has another reason to celebrate. Publishers Weekly announced that its Bookstore of the Year award goes to Roberta Rubin's bookstore in Winnetka. According to Publishers Weekly, The Book Stall is also experiencing high sales this year due to changes in the bookstore market.

We need more windmills. We have too many birds. These windmills have been chopping up birds by the thousands around the country. We'll probably get rid of a few species with more windmills. Clean energy and less birds. Who would complain?

We should line every pond in the area with these useless monstrocities (sp) which might do some good reducing the illegal geese population. We could then offer jobs for the unemployed picking up dead geese and handling disposal. Make the environment more healthy; reduce unemployment saving tax dollars; and ship the waste to the White House to fertilize M's garden. A win-win and eco nuts could then have an eco friendly positive to cite.

Dan - yer an idiot. These big windmills don't chop birds to pieces. But, seeing how you are a raging republican and emphatically believe the "earth needs to toughen up", why do you care anyway? Less oil means cheaper energy prices. The real problem is domestic or feral cats, windows, cars, pesticides and power lines which kill birds.

Another is that it sounds good to be rid of fossil fuels and nuclear energy, but you are talking thousands of jobs gone and wind energy has still not added up to the existing energy that we have now. What will we do with the thousands of employees that will no longer have a job? Will the government create jobs for them too? We all know that really means more tax dollars and we will be the one who "creates" them. Meanwhile, gas goes up because they won't re-open oil operations (you knew that the president closed some when he got into office, right? I have a friend who told me that he worked for one in Texas that he closed down.) and they won't drill on-shore in some very remote places in Alaska, for example. Food, clothes, everything is going up while people are getting less money and no cost of living increases at their jobs. We have a government who knows no budget and doesn't care who pays the bills. In Illinois, they "Balance the Budget" on how they can borrow. When will people get it? Quit living in the now, or what sounds good. Look at all of this with EYES WIDE OPEN.

I will spell it out for you.

It leaves a wide scope of interpretation. What is bullying? See if that same definition is the same in the next person. Is it a look, word, action, a shirt design, or a belief?

Bullying is wrong, and one might think it is on an e-News posting situation where one goes from town to town posting hateful, lies. Or is it a first amendment issue? Lines should be drawn with clear definitions and real consequences for those actions. Only then, should it come up for some kind of vote. Not when it is wide open for interpretation.

Should a neo-nazi be able to denigrate Jews by discrimination or beat Jews up because their beliefs are not the same in the name of religious freedom? What if an atheist discriminates against you or your children because of your fundamentalist beliefs? Think of your girls being relentlessly verbally assaulted because of their beliefs. What's the big deal, right? It's religious expression and that is a freedom in this country. Ok, never mind. The proposed wind turbines will be placed far enough offshore that you won't hear them any more than you will hear the naturally occurring wind. They will not be located in migration paths of birds nor will they spin fast enough to kill birds. Statistically speaking, tall buildings kill more birds than wind turbines.
If you've been paying attention to the news recently you will know that two obsolete coal fired power plants on Chicago's south side are being phased out. For decades these coal fired plants have been spewing pollutants such as mercury, sulfur and may other compounds that cause detrimental effects on the respiratory health of families living in the miles surrounding them. We will need new cleaner sources of power to replace the power being lost that will keep your home heated, cooled and your computer humming while you spew nonsense into this public forum. If you think a wind farm is unsightly you should take a look at these ugly old power plants and the environmental degradation they have caused to their surrounding areas.
Wind turbines make electricity. The only way they will power your car is if you charge the batteries in your electric car.

Donna, sounds like you want to usurp what the private money rejected years ago. Private money are people who risk their livelihoods on investing, so they actually do the necessary due diligence on the real return of good gathered from the invention. They are not motivated by a lame attempt to get your votes using made up facts from their helpful accomplices we know as environmentalists. I don’t propose to know everything, like my friends who vote for Obama, but one thing is certain, top down decisions on where our money goes never works in favor of the people, it only helps the ones who implement the policy. It also destroys a level playing field for those that one day may provide better solutions.

To McCloud
Businesses and investors in the USA and around the world are investing and profiting from wind and solar projects. When the government makes it possible for a project to be built, such as the deal to allow wind farms to be built off shore in the Great Lakes, it is normally responding to a want or need created by the marketplace and its lobbyists. It is left to private investors to put up the capital, build and maintain the project. The State of Illinois is not demanding that wind farms blight the horizon of Lake Michigan, but the state does demand that the project is environmentally sound, out of flyways and shipping lanes and well maintained. If we want to look for conflicts of interest we have to look at whether or not the state as the land owner will receive royalties from the sales of electricity gen

Large and small businesses are finding that being "green" is beneficial to their own interests. When they make their facilities more energy efficient they increase their profits. When they remove harmful chemicals from their products or engineers them to be less material intensive it lowers their costs and contributes to their bottom line. It's also great PR. Its a giant business opportunity not a burden. The US tax code, as cumbersome as it is, has long been used to encourage and discourage certain behaviors of the tax payers. Now we find ourselves being encouraged to invest in a clean energy economy and efficiency rather than in the old dirty fuels economy. It's still up to us in the market place to make the choice. When the Army decided to go "green" they did so because it was in their strategic best interest. Do we want good soldiers driving fuel trucks (large bombs) through enemy territory or do we make our outposts energy self sufficient by being efficient and using solar and wind to drive the lights radios and computers? When congress cuts the budget does the army complain about the electric and water bill or do they get more efficient? The Army chose to be efficient in a very big way. Their investment benefits the public, through lower government costs and lower prices for efficiency products in the market place.

Donna - unless the government subsidizes these projects, no one will build them. They are incredibly inefficient, and the ROI is virtually non-existent. The only way companies find profit in these projects is through the federal government paying for them through subsidies. When the money from the feds dries up, these wind farms will stop being built. In addition - look into the long term maintenance of wind fams. They are a drain on financial resources, and the energy from them is inconsistent and unreliable, and it can not be stored.

Actually TwoKidDad, yes - and I don't like the subsidies to the farmers either, for that matter. Or that banks. Or the Insurance Comapnies. However, I was responding to this artlcle, which is about wind power. And, being very close to wind power, I can tell you that each time the government subsidies are close to ending, most wind projects get put on hold, and developers threaten to pull the plug. Alas, our fine congress, when cornered, votes to extend the subsidies, which takes more money out of our pockets. Also, I can tell you that if it were not for the subsidies, there would be absolutely no money to be made, and no energy developer would build a wind farm. They are not cost effective to build, or maintain, and they don't produce a consistent stream of electricity. As it is today, the biggest enticement for building these farms is that the developers make money off of the government, which is really you and me, and the end result is that we will end up paying higher energy prices.

Comment_arrow

TwoKidDad

10:36 am on Wednesday, April 4, 2012

HM - then eliminate all of the subsidies, lets go with a level playing field. But no, that just got voted down by Republican controlled House. They voted to protect subsidies to oil. So if oil gets subsidies, so should wind. What are the costs to maintain a wind turbine? Heck of lot less than an oil or coal power plant. The constant stream of energy will be combated when we finally adopt a smart grid and the technology that already exist with fluid metal batteries goes commercial.

Lennie Jarratt - They were dumb not to require actual wind meter readings prior to installation. There are kits that cost about $300 that you can use to test windspeeds. And you need to test over a period of time before you make the investment this large. This situation would be like putting an oil rig up in downtown Cary, without knowing if there is oil there or not. Don't base your estimated speeds based on a chart for the entire area.

It has recently come to my attention that the underlying reasons and causes for McCloudsUncle's possession-obsessed missives must be defined, examined, and resolved, or they'll never cease. I would like to start by discussing McCloudsUncle's metanarratives, mainly because they scare me. The thing I'm the most frightened about is that McCloudsUncle is known for requiring religious services around the world to begin with "McCloudsUncle is great; McCloudsUncle is good; we thank McCloudsUncle for our daily food". This is not only a grotesque betrayal of the principles that McCloudsUncle himself claims to uphold but a clear demonstration of how if you think that this is humorous or exaggerated, you're wrong. His barbarism-prone jeremiads are meticulously designed to keep the population unaware, uneducated, dumbed down, and focused on stupefying activities like video games. The intention is to prevent people from noticing that McCloudsUncle has been tossing quaint concepts like decency, fairness, and rational debate out the window. The take-away message of this letter is that McCloudsUncle is leading us down the road of terrorism. We should hold these words to our bosom, use them as a shield against McCloudsUncle's inequities, and wield them unilaterally against those who would increase alienation and delinquency among our young people.

Then you moved into terrorism, probably from an emotional response from my comment. My comment was not meant to hurt, it was a response from your mean comment to the other guy who ran for office and it looks like he lost. Bottom line here with this article, I’ve already said what is necessary, without doing much in the way of research. After some time spent, here is a list of our wasted money used to inform people who decide not to think. The following companies have declared bankruptcy after receiving great sums of our hard earned money in the name of green. Solyndra, Abound Solar, Energy Conversion Devices, BrightSource, LSP Energy, Evergreen Solar, Ener1, SunPower, Beacon Power, ECOtality, A123, Uni-Solar, Azure Dynamics, and now Solar Trust. Most of the executives were Obama supporters and escaped with their riches, who could blame them? , I would advise you or anyone to think how this “new” technology of wind and solar has been around for at least 50 years, and ask, why has it not made any impact on our source of energy.

Congratulations to McCloud for saying that immoralism is absolutely essential to the well-being of society. That indubitably wins the prize for being the most ignominious and pharisaical thing I've ever heard. Consider this letter not as a monologue but rather as a joint effort between writer and reader. Together we shall put him on notice for his attempts to play fast and loose with the truth. Together we shall provide information and inspiration to as many people as possible. And together we shall take personal action and point out that the emperor has no clothes on. He has, at times, called me "pot-valiant" or "improvident". Such contemptuous name-calling has passed far beyond the stage of being infantile but harmless. It has the capacity to sentence more and more people to poverty, prison, and early death. A great many decent people are just as distressed as I am about McCloud's publications. Do give that some thought.

Are you aware of how much money Fox lost when it first started broadcasting its propaganda? A lot. New ventures tend to do that. It takes time to see positive results. Do you propose we wait until we're on our last oil supplies before we start finding alternate energy sources? That doesn't sound like a viable plan to me. Not very forward thinking. Then again, that seems to be a common theme among the right wingers. How sad to have no vision.

"Moderates and conservatives were adept at guessing how liberals would answer questions. Liberals, especially those who described themselves as “very liberal,” were least able to put themselves in the minds of their adversaries and guess how conservatives would answer.

1) We found no support for the hypothesis that liberals would be most accurate; liberals were the least accurate about conservatives and about liberals. The largest inaccuracies were in liberals’ underestimations of conservatives’ Harm and Fairness concerns, and liberals further exaggerated the political differences by overestimating their own such concerns.

2) We found some support for the hypothesis that moderates would be most accurate, which they were in the case of the binding foundations.

The research showed that, by a significant margin, liberals were less accurate in their depiction of conservatives than the converse. "

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and goodwill, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!"

If you are going to quote Scripture, do that. Don't rewrite it.
Ezekiel 25:15-17

15 “This is what the Sovereign LORD says: ‘Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, 16 therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Kerethites and destroy those remaining along the coast. 17 I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I take vengeance on them.’”

You sound like a young man who knows he lost this debate a long time ago. Let me punctuate the facts and suggest you google each one followed by the words bankrupt and amaze your friends by tabulating the wasted Obama money. This is my last post for this article, I have told you why and supported with facts, sans the Bohemian nonsense.

I'm all for seeking alternative energy sources, but the Obama administration has wasted billions of our tax dollars funding these losers. Let the free market rule the day...private investors do a little bit better than Obama/Chu in picking winners.

Nope! Ugly and inefficient, and will not put a dent into our actual energy needs! Bird populations will get caught up in the blades. STOP THIS MADNESS PLEASE! "liberalism is a mental disorder"

Wind energy has been in the lives of humans long before the modern age and will stay long after …. Let us take a moment and learn what wind energy has to offer (http://www.economywatch.com/renewable-energy/history-and-future-of-wind-energy.html) and understand the many ways it already benefits us. School districts across the country are entering wind energy partnerships (http://www.nativeenergy.com/wray-school-distric-wind-turbine.html) in an effort to fund education to make a positive difference in our collective future (http://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy04osti/35512.pdf). It is never too late to learn something new, regardless of our present points of view :-)
