Patch Flash: IL Senate Says Yes to Gay Marriage Bill

Same-sex marriage bill proceeds to the House for a vote.

Illinois gay and lesbian couples received a Valentine’s Day gift from the Illinois Senate. The Democrat-led Senate passed legislation, in a 34-21-2 vote, this afternoon that would allow same-sex marriages in Illinois, according to Huffington Post.

The gay marriage bill now goes to the House.

If it is signed into law, marriage officially would be changed in state law from an act between a man and a woman to two people. The legislation says nothing in the proposed law would force a religious denomination or minster to “solemnize any marriage,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

If the bill is also approved by the state House of Representatives, Illinois will join Washington, D.C. and nine other U.S. marriage equality states, according to the Huffington Post. Illinois has had civil unions available for same-sex couples since June 2011.

To those negative posters in this thread - tell how your children require God's help if Gays and Lesbians are finally granted the same rights as anyone else?

If you feel God thinks gay marriage is wrong, ya' know what? Don't get gay married.

Let me know when you start campaigning to make divorced illegal, since that is mentioned far more in the bible. The bible says don't eat pork. Shall we pass a law? And what about that whole "don't judge others" thing?

Picking and choosing biblical passages to hide your own dislike is cowardly. You find homosexuals distasteful, that's your right. But own up to it and don't hide behind the bible and don't use your interpretation of what God wants to dictate what rights you are willing to "allow" other people to have.

Do you enjoy using your computer to type your hateful comments? You might also want to google "Alan Turing" who was not only a war hero, he also is considered the father of modern computing. He committed suicide, because he was persecuted for being gay, which was illegal

While it is no longer illegal in American to be gay, right now, in 2013, you can still be fired in a majority of states, simply for being gay (or even being perceived as gay even if your not).

You may want to remember the phrase "All men are created equal..." Slowly, we are getting there.

Flame away haters. I will not add any more content to this thread. May God have mercy on you for judging others, in defiance of God's will.

Didn't you know, Skokieguy? If the gays can marry it means heterosexual couples will divorce, become gay themselves, and then marry their new same-sex partner. The whole country will become gay! It's just a matter of time! For people who scream so much about rights and freedom, you'd think they would want that for all Americans, not just for themselves and their narrow-minded intolerant pals. I guess only the tea party et al. has the divine right to say who gets freedom and who does not. They are so righteous after all.

@Dan, I didn't ID you as a hater, necessarily. The fact that you disagree is your right. There are some on these boards that are nasty about this opportunity to bring equal rights to the LGBT community. This bill guarantees the right for any religion to refuse Gay marriage, so that excuse is invalid. Marriage can be a civil ceremony. People that don't even believe in God have the right to get married. Even a murderer on Death Row can get married. But not a Gay brother or sister? Beyond religion, it gets down to a bigoted attitude toward Gays. Diversity is good. The Constitution guarantees that everyone is equal. It does not say some people are more equal than others.

Me too! Call or write your representative asking them to okay marriage equality. The bill clearly allows churches to refuse to participate. Marriage is a civil ceremony. Heck, they do drive by marriages in Vegas. Weddings are performed on Death Row. 50% of straight marriages end in divorce. The 'institution of marriage' will be strengthened by more people who love each other being able to get married. Denying our Gay brothers and sisters the right to Marry is wrong.

Whether you support being gay or not you should support their rights. Fundamental rights in America do not just add value to those who have them but also those who don't. America was built off of the concept of the minority, as an accepting country not a rejecting one. The Senate did not vote on whether you need to accept gays or join their lifestyle or support the choice they make. The Senate merely voted on letting them make the same choices like you and me. Even with civil unions all we created was a separate but equal system and how equal was it. Due to DOMA other states and the federal government weren't required to accept the fact that the couple was married in Illinois. There is no homosexual agenda in the same way as there is no heterosexual agenda. There is an American agenda where people do not deserve to be discriminated against due to issues of disagreement by the state (speech, press, religion, sex, race, national origin, LGBT status).

Deerfield Resident

5:09 pm on Friday, February 15, 2013

It's a rights issue....just like gun ownership rights.....the thing that disturbs most people about even talking about gays is the impact it will have on our kids and the disgusting acts they do behind closed doors! Just look at one of their parades....it's all about sex! NOT the type of sex God had in mind.....disgusting. Drop that portion of the equation and maybe I'll listen to their needs for rights.

Comment_arrow

DeerfieldResident

Really people, don't worry about what others do behind closed doors. I don't spend any time thinking about my straight friends' sex life. Sure the parade is over the top, and I've always argued detrimental to the cause, but just don't go if you don't like it.

Our kids will be just fine. Making same sex marriage legal doesn't make more kids gay. We won't be teaching anything about a gay lifestyle other than tolerance, and we should be teaching that for all things. You don't have to like how someone lives his or her life, but unless it directly affects you, let it go. There is absolutely no way two men or two women marrying one another is going to have an impact on my life.

I firmly believe that 90 percent of the overly aggressive, anti-gay people would change their minds if someone they loved was gay. Once you know and love a gay person, you'll see they are no different than a straight person.

http://247wallst.com/2011/08/25/the-states-with-the-highest-divorce-rates/2/

I'm saying that the states with the highest divorce rates are the states where family values are touted the most (touted- not necessarily achieved) and that claim gay marriage will ruin marriage for everyone else. It looks like they're doing a fine job all by themselves without having all those gays spoiling it for the rest. So anyway, who are you to say gays can't love each other as much as straight people? How is that measured? I believe that is an opinion, not a fact. Just as your assertion that they stay married because there are so few is an opinion and not a fact. There is a difference between the two.

If you're going to bring a sexual preference into it and are forced to room with someone - you better know what they like whether you agree with it or not. Another story for you ...when I was in college my roommate had a girl over every night or more specific ...every day for you know what. That was hard enough to deal with but expected from him. Imagine that scenario for your straight son with a gay roomate...the way it's going - that'll be the norm. Keep everyone's sexual habits behind closed doors including straights and we'll all be better off.

Thanks for your comment. It's sad to read all the fear and hate that comes out of people these days. A lot of people seem to think that if they are in a room with a gay person that they will make them gay as well, or that the gay person will force themselves upon the hetero person. People need to quit flattering themselves. Just because someone is gay doesn't mean they will love you and want to date you. And if a guy thinks you are attractive? It means you look good, super. It doesn't mean you are gay also.

If you get back to your room and there is the old sock on the door, you just hang out at your friend's room, like you would if your roommate was in there with a girl. I don't want to walk in on either of them. Worried about what they are doing? Reality check again, there isn't one thing a gay couple does sexually that many hetero couples don't do either.

Just Sayin, Demosthenes, Procrustes Foil, Nightcrawler, Reubear, etc.. When are you ladies going to come out of the closet and use your given names? It's easy to sit where you are and call everyone else 'ignorant' and 'haters' when you are anonymous. Really. What's up with that?

Using your entire full name on internet forums like this are foolish. Attempting to call people out for the use of a screen name on a forum just means you have no debating skills or have run out of anything worthwhile to say. Hopefully you will wise up.

@Charles, at least you go by your first name.

I disagree with your suggestion that calling people out for being totally anonymous equates to not being able to debate, etc.. I would suggest to you that people who go on a community forum and use names e.g., like 'mr. common sense', etc. are spewing opinions and calling people ugly names because they aren't willing to stand up for their convictions.

A way to get off topic? uh, that's just whack.

Listen, my biggest gripe about this is that 1. i have no idea if i'm talking to a man, woman or 13 year old Hindu boy, and yes, i treat people differently considering where they are coming from in life. 2. It's easy to call people racists and haters when you aren't using your name.

As much as the internet has helped us, this anonymity has made us nastier towards our fellow man. or woman. or Hindu boy.

So you just keep on assuming what you do and that's fine by me.

So Dan, does that comment above mean that you would change your stance and/or delivery based on who you are talking to? Why not just assume you are always talking to your peers? If it is hard to tell, then it just becomes a discussion. You're not talking down to a person based on what you prejudge their mental capacity to be.

@Brian. Yes, not my stance, but yes..i definitely use a different tone with women and children.

You believe that pretending that you're always talking to a peer is the best approach, but as you can see by some of the back and forth diatribe, people end up name calling, etc.. and i'm just not going to get into some of that with women and teenagers. Not that they can't handle it, it's just not the way i was raised to behave.

Well Dan...We could have chosen screen names that looked like given birth names...such as...let me think...ahhhh perhaps the name Dan Arenov. But...we appear more creative than you. I could stop there...but I have one more point...and I hope this illuminates you. In this day and age it is intelligent and prudent not to use a given name in social media sites. Just too many ways to be tracked down...and...given the apparent number of lunatics out there why take unnecessary chances with ones safety. A whole lot of innocents get stalked and killed over less than words on a second rate news service such as the Patch. For instance, I just searched your "name" as given here on the P. on multiple social media sites, including the White Pages and a random check on Google. No Dan Arenov came up. Plenty of Dan Arenovskis however. Hummmmmm... Ok...the findings could indicate you spurn all social media sites ( which means you are very old and totally out of touch) , or it means that you have a ' ski ' at the end of your birth name which you have conveniently dropped for Patch comments or finally, you are hiding your true identity behind a moniker as well. All in all and at the very least, you may be the imprudent one here...so calling people out on their choices is well..."ignorant". If you would like to discuss this further, please include your correct home phone number in the next comment. Or...LOL are you all of a sudden going to get prudent.

It was/is the winter home of various circus organizations. Many aging circus 'freaks' ( probably great people) retire there. He lives in a single wide with cardboard window coverings and a hot plate. He does eat only canned produce and meat and sleeps on a flea bitten twin size mattress on the floor. He rants and raves but his neighbors, the worlds shortest man and the bearded lady pay no mind. Once a week he consults the one eyed fortune teller. He wants to know when the construction business will pick up and when Obama will die. Laughingly, he is stuck in a Fellini like nightmare of his own making.

As long as it's straight sex you ignore the 'lifestyle'. Infidelity in marriage is an epidemic and you're worried about what two committed individuals do in privacy. Tiger Woods, Rev. Ted Haggard, Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggart, Newt Gingrich, all cheated, and you judge.

You can just reply directly to my comment above if it is to be aimed at me. And I fail to see what the lifestyle has to do with any of this. As I mentioned, if two men or two women are in a room together, anything they can and will do sexually can and is done by heterosexual couples as well.

You seem to be against the equality of it and against the act. So not only do you feel that not everyone deserves the same governmental rights, but it seems you also would like to monitor what goes on behind closed doors.

I know you are looking to cause a rise here by throwing phrases and words like "laughing at him" and "gross" but none of your talking points touch on the overall issue at all here. You happily put down others to make yourself seem and feel superior.

I'm sure if this was the 60's and the last miscegenation laws were being struck down you would spouting off the same vitriol about interracial relations. Get over it. Gay rights really don't affect you or me or anyone who is heterosexual.

Dear Field Resident,
What's the lifestyle you talk of? Is it that people are having intimate relationships? Is it just that you think relationships are only about sex? It would seem that the above description has met your requirement of not really knowing what is going on and since it isnt impacting you, not being a concern of yours. But yet you must imagine what is going on, lingering over it, replaying it again and again in slow motion in your head; feeling your hands get a little sweaty and you heart race a faster. Hmmmm... Well maybe you are right; these gays are affecting you.

Tolerant, cerebral, and educated is really the norm, so you just don't cut it. I don't think you should be allowed to vote without taking an IQ test. And you certainly shouldn't be able to look at any ladies in a higher class than yourself. Hmm, what other constraints can I put on you because of the way I judge you? Brian? J.S.? Brian yeah but 2 men having sex IS gross - fact of life! I don't want to monitor anything - I just don't want to hear about people's sexual habits. More importantly don't compare mixed marriages with gay rights like its the next hurdle. I have no problem with straight mixed marriages. What you are saying is the same thing though. Two people in love, black and white or two of the same gender. Your argument is the same as what was said in the 50's and 60's. It's gross, societal breakdown, shameful, abomination....You don't want others to be happy because you think it is gross. I don't eat yogurt...i think it's awful...that doesn't make it wrong for others. I wouldn't have sex with a man...not something that would do it for me. That doesn't make it wrong for others. My life stays exactly the same if someone eats yogurt in front of me or someone marries the same gender in front of me.

You want to blame the degradation of society on two people in love. Real good logic. Damn, all this love is tearing our country apart.

When your only argument is that it is "gross," you are swinging at air.

Just, i'm generally a little bit kinder to women in my travels. You can blame my parents for that.. and a little quicker to give it right back to somebody if i believe that they are a man.

I'm also a little bit more considerate when 'debating' a teenager, as they think they know more than they do at that age and tend to be a little bit more idealistic than realistic.

this doesn't mean that i'm going to change my point of view, but i may be less lenient when dealing with men.

We can argue all day long about this, but i am convinced that the internet has made us a nastier nation of people quick to name call, etc. You are certainly proof of that.

Dan, While we may not see ee-eye on most issues, I will say that the anonymity of the internet and postings have made us a much more agressive and less polite society. I think that it also leads to people making wild accusations knowing that they do not have to stand behind them. We have folks on both sides of the aisle (using politics for an example) who will propagate half-truths since they know that it cannot be traced back to them. Lord knows how many Facebook posts I have seen from both Liberals and Conservatives that will say things that are absolutely non-sense... they just hope to feed the frenzy and that some folks along the line will believe and forward it as the truth. I think that the anonymity has also led to folks showing some of their 'real-colors' because they can show a point of view that might otherwise be hidden because it is too far out of the main stream. This can be blantant bigotry and prejudice against all of a race or religion (see Deerfield Resident posts in this string for a perfect example of this) or death threats against Rush Limbaugh.
I try to post things under my psuedonym exactly as I would if I were writing under my actual name. But to the point someone else made, even then there is still some fear that someone out there crazy enough to push a discussion too far to the point actual physical harm to my family. That's probably why even you used a variation of your actual name.

Comment_arrow

Mr Tibbs

but that said, Dan, my parent also brought me up to be very polite. I still say Sir and Ma'am to most all I meet. I try to open doors for those that may need it and yes, I do still give my seat up on the train if a woman doesn't have one (most of the time). I would say that the other part of the internet is that it is the great unknown and begs for people to treat others equally to start. you don't know if the person is man, woman, millionaire, food-stamp recipient, laborer, executive, gay, straight, democrat, republican or independent. Hopefully it allows us to treat others as equal to start with... which is really all that most of the discussion of gay rights is about. My sexuality has nothing to do with whether I should be a boy scout or can pick the life-partner of my choice and receive the same rights as others who have also picked their mate. For the most part (except for Deerfield Resident) that sexuality should not impact you at all.

McCloud, your statement is quite similar to me saying "I wish conservatives would stop killing black people" or "I wish Republicans would stop beating their wives". you try to link a behavior to an entire group of people that are not as homogeneous as you portray them. Usually, statements like this are the result of ignorance, fear and a lack of actual facts.

No. no evidence, just a hunch based on how the ACLU operates and how it seems as though we have been catering to Muslims since 9/11. And hey, take it with a grain of salt...ask anyone of these people on here and they will tell you that i am part of the great unwashed, uneducated, masses!

RB / Reubear.....ever hear the one about the homo and the Muslim? I don't hate homos they're just funny and life needs humor - you chose that lifestyle - don't be so sensitive. Go ahead and make fun of anything you want about me - I can laugh with you . As for Muslims ..I lost 2 friends in 911 - I'm not looking for sympathy but now you wonder why I hate Muslims? Hate has its place ....my mother lived in France in 1939 she hated hitler and Stalin. Is it not ok to hate nazis when they were allowed to march in Skokie or the KKK when our constitution protects their right? Remember England when they thought hitler was their ally...how foolish. I'm saying beware of Muslims - I hate them for a reason you don't have to hate....yet.

I think DR should be required to file separate tax returns, transfer funds with his spouse using Gift Tax Exemptions instead of spouse exemptions, not be allowed to visit his/her life partner in an Alabama hospital should they be injured, not have SS survivor benefits or pension survivor benefits, enjoy higher insurance ratings since they are not 'married'. Anything along those lines should be perfect for DR. Does anyone mind if I get back on topic? The bill is written so that Churches can deny gay marriages if they want to and the couple can't sue because of the denial. Gay marriage is a civil ceremony as much as any other marriage. Gay marriage does not threaten Marriage...divorce does. 50% of straight marriages end in divorce, so holding up the 'institution of marriage' as being threatened by two people who love each other getting married is bizarre. If you have a gay friend or family member then support for this should be easier. If you don't know that you have a gay friend or family member, them end the Gay jokes and homophobic persona and you might discover that you do have gay friends and family.

Allowing same-sex couples to wed under the law would not devalue traditional marriage. It would affirm the bedrock values that underlie and sustain such unions.

Marriage promotes stable families, safeguards the interests of children and rewards committed relationships.

Recognizing same-sex marriages demonstrates respect for personal freedoms and keeps government out of the intimate affairs of citizens. More people in same-sex relationships are adopting or giving birth to children; this provides the security of a legal commitment for those children. It's the fair thing to do. -- Chicago Tribune 2/18/13
