Space Invaders at the Gym
What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to gym etiquette?
It’s as predictable as it is unpleasant.
The gym in January is not a pretty place to be.
For regular gym-goers, it means two things: it is going to be extra-crowded until people give up on their resolutions, and there are going to be many people lacking gym etiquette.
I keep the bar low when it comes to manners at the gym. Talking on your cellphone? I can tune you out with my iPod. Hogging the treadmill? No problem, I’ll do the elliptical today. Not wiping down your machine? I clean it before I get on.
No, my biggest pet peeve at the gym is probably so trivial, I’m embarrassed to admit it with all that there is going on in the world. Here goes: It’s unbearable to me when there is a row of open machines and someone picks the treadmill right next to mine.
Call me the territory police, but I like not feeling smothered when I’m working out. I'm sweaty. I don't want to feel like I am racing the person next to me, and, in general, I like my space. Is that so wrong?
So, just askin’, what bothers you the most at the gym?

I agree with you Savannah. That's just like somebody sitting next to you on an empty bus.

Be aware of your surroundings. Moving blindly or carelessly into another's space can be dangerous to you and others. Use common courtesy.

It's kind of the same principle of taking the bathroom stall RIGHT NEXT TO an already occupied one if the rest of them are open. Give a buffer people!

there are 2 types of people in the world leaders and Followers.. you are just leading the way to great workout.. just like in the movie theater how people sit by you or infront of you.. its their instinct to follow the leader.. be glad your a leader :)

A little locker room modesty would also be appreciated. And while I've got the mic, how bout greater frequency with hand sanitation. Disgusting!

And, what about ppl in line at the grocery store check-out? Do they really think they will get out of the store faster if they stand just inches away from the person in front of them? Do they really think it will speed up the line if they, while rudely talking on their cell phones, keep bumping the back of your ankles with their carts? Just askin'.

I hate when someone ties up several of the machines at once, by leaving his sweaty towel on it, so he can do his"intervals" over the next hour.....and he's really bad, too! When Asked if you can use a machine quickly for a few reps, he says "NO".

Try Superior 24/7 HealthClub in Crystal Lake on Route 14 and Main Street. Since they are new and open 24 hours, they are not so crowded and they have a pretty large facility.
