The annual event started in 2005 when the Polo Club decided to do something to say thank you to the Riding Club and the landowners of the Barrington Hills riding trails. These landowners help compose the nearly 200 miles of private riding trails in the area that connect with the Cook County Forest Preserve.
“Historically, the idea was that no matter where you lived in Barrington Hills, you could climb on your horse and go visit anyone else that lives in Barrington Hills,” said John Rosene of the Barrington Hills Polo Club. “These trail landowners may not have horses themselves or be members of the club, but they are generous citizens who make these riding trails possible.”
The first LeCompte Kalaway Landowners Cup was successful, but not nearly as large as the event is today. The polo match attracts between 2,000 and 3,000 people each year.
“We have corporate tents and private tailgates lining both sides of a 300-yard long field and we have a number of attractions,” Rosene explained.
There are two amateur polo matches for spectators to enjoy at the Barrington Hills polo field at 362 Bateman Road. The first match is the battle of the sexes where the all-men’s team faces off against the all-women’s team. The second match is the star of the show: The Le Compte Kalaway Landowners Cup.
The polo isn’t the only attraction to the event. Event-goers can also enjoy tailgating, Clydesdale horses, the Running of the Hounds and more. This year Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will throw out the first ball.
“Because the Cook County Forest Preserve is our biggest landowner, she’ll be throwing out the first ball in our first game,” he said. Both games are sponsored by Audi of America.
Tickets to the LeCompte Kalaway Landowners Cup are $15 for adults; kids get in free. Those wanting to tailgate need to purchase a tailgate space for $100. The $100 fee includes six tickets.
To add to the fun, there’s also a contest for the best tailgate, and a prize for the fanciest ladies’ hat.
Parking is available off of Bateman Road where police will be directing traffic. There will be golf carts shuttling people to and from the parking lot. Tickets are available at the gate; parking is free. Those interested in tailgating need to call Megan West to reserve at (847) 702-0475.
