VIDEO: Rainbow Road Haunted House Spooks Residents
Many claim to have seen a phantom house mysteriously appear and quickly vanish along the road in Barrington.
There are plenty of ghost stories surrounding White Cemetery and Cuba Road in Barrington that date all the way back to the 1960s.
Many have claimed to see strange orbs of light bouncing from the cemetery’s fence, while others say they’ve been chased by a phantom car that appears out of nowhere at the cemetery’s gate.
Patch has been working on a series about haunted venues in the Chicago area. As part of the series, I met up with ghost researcher Dale Kaczmarek to talk about some of the legends behind the ghosts of Barrington. Some of the tales of White Cemetery and Cuba Road are just urban legends that were started by a Palatine school teacher 50 years ago. However, Kaczmarek said he believes some of the ghost stories are actually true.
There’s a supposedly haunted street called Rainbow Road near White Cemetery that is teeming with paranormal activity. There was a home that burnt to the ground many years ago along that stretch of road, and some say they still see that house appear to them as they drive by.
Watch our interview with Kaczmarek to hear him describe some of the ghostly things people claim to have seen on Rainbow Road. I'm not one to be spooked by ghosts, especially in broad daylight, but even I got the chills driving down that street!
Be sure to check back to Patch on Monday when we'll show you a video that claims to "debunk" the flashlight phenomenon we described at the Country House Restaurant.

gotta say, this guy you interviewed is surely not a local. the house that burned down was at intersection of cuba and Rainbow. On cuba Road, not Rainbow. House was left abandoned and unfinished construction for many years. Rumor was the man was an attorney and building o rhis wife when she killed herslf in the home. He didn't have the heart to keep building it. Local kids would hang out there. One year vandals set fire to it and burned it down.

If you stand atop the hill on Rainbow Road immediately north of Cuba road, then look to the south of Cuba Road, you can see the remains of the foundation of the house that burnt. Easiest to see in Spring before the marsh plants grow and hide it. Supposedly, area fire departments have responded to calls from passing motorists of a house fire at that spot on several occasions. The house burnt decades ago. RAINBOW ROAD itself was where an Insane Asylum once existed in the early 20th century. The property of that asylum in the entire area where the road, Kaitlin's Way now exists. (It's not even been 10 years yet since an original part of the gates leading down the asylum drive were removed so the area could be widened for the entrance to Kaitlin's Way.) The area of Kaitlin's Way is supposed to be haunted by the spirits of patients of the asylum who died there. You are suppose to be able to hear ghostly screams of agony in the area. If you're brave, you could stop by at the couple of mansions that are now built there and ask the residents!

This encounter was over very quickly, and I honestly don't have any idea what I actually saw. I've traveled Cuba road for over 20 years now, having both lived and worked in Barrington. I had never experienced anything supernatural until January of 2008. It occurred at about 5:40 in the morning, and it was still pitch black outside. The area near the cemetery is very dark, the only light sources coming from the porch lights of scattered nearby houses. As I was driving east bound on Cuba road, I could see, about a quarter mile up the road, a single white bicycle headlight coming toward me. It was very bright. I thought to myself that it was rather early for anyone to be riding a bicycle, not to mention how dark it still was and how cold it was. I continued driving toward the "bicycle headlight" when it suddenly split into five separate headlights. Now there were five bicycle headlights coming toward me. The lights were there for a total of about three seconds. Then in the very next moment, all five lights were gone. I couldn't help but find this incredibly odd. Then, as I got closer to the area in which I had seen the five lights, I realized the light, and then the five lights, had lit up right along the road next to White Cemetery. (continued...)

(...continuing) I slowed and looked all around as best I could. From my vehicle, I looked through the iron fence of the cemetery. There was nothing in there to see. There are two side streets which 'T' at Cuba road, across from the cemetery. I could see no one or any bicycles anywhere on either street. I have no idea what I actually saw. If they were "orbs," then they were incredibly bright. I keep looking for more occurrences, as I still drive right past the cemetery almost every day. I haven't seen anything supernatural since.

A known fact... When October comes and all these stories are dug up the residents of Rainbow Road are always greeted with visitors seeking thrills in the middle of the night, & randomly during the day to ask about the urban legends. Our dogs bark & howl & police radios become busy with chatter about frequent calls requesting a deterrence to the squealing loiterers & vandelism on private property. Sometimes the police just patrol the area more during this month because they know they will eventually be called. ...

There are many stories, it's true. All different versions with similarities. I've also heard a member of the Mafia owned the house, he was murdered and the home was burned to hide the evidence! The home was actually located on what is now Kaitlins Way. There were 10 acres marked with a gated entrance & called the Arboretum. The home owners were greeted with tragedy when the man of the house died in a plane crash. The woman could not keep up with the property & it became overgrown & run down. The city took possession of the uninhabited property, & the fire department used it as a training site for fire fighterers. So yes, that part is true, the home was burnt down. The rest from what I understand, is fabricated urban legend. Also, I hate to spoil everyones fun but If you look at zoning records no insane asylum was ever located in the area.

"no insane asylum was ever located in the area."
Wrong, it is called by a new name, Barrington High School.

My husband, 39, had an encounter in his teens on Rainbow Rd. He was driving with a few other kids down Rainbow late at night. The windows on the car rolled down by themselves and they couldn't get them back up. He also witnessed what appeared to be a satanic ritual in the woods there. Many people wearing black robes with hoods that ran after them when they saw them.

I remember back in the day, we used to go up there knowing of the rumors and urban legends and mess around with people that were driving through the area. It has been a long time, but those were great times! I never experienced anything "out of the ordinary". I also heard that the Asylum even existed was a rumor, as there are no records of it. As for White Cemetery, that was a little more creepy and we never ventured there, but the stories still send that chill up your spine!

Well, let's review, since my mother, father and brother are all buried here, this stupid video and the stupid man along with stupid "PATCH" have done a terrible thing... They have now thrown down the glove and dared the little teen monsters to ransack the Cemetary again and again. There are no such thing as ghosts! It is impossible to believe that grown people still think that there is!
In 1973, my family buried my brother and then my father..within a year the teen monsters tipped over the headstone.. I dug a moat around the headstone, after righting it, no easy feat for me but anger made it possible. I then put several bags of cement in the moat and borrowed water from Mr Catlow on the corner of Cuba and Harbor, yes, the Catlow Theatre builder and owner, who went to school with my mother..
What these teen monsters are doing is a crime! The neighbors try to keep an eye on the place, but these teen monster's parents evidently don't care about the whereabouts of their monsters...
Please note, three vehicles went by, all of them over the speed limit for Cuba Road.
