Divine Decorum: Expert Advice for Parties and Weddings

Q: I’m getting married in 5 weeks and I have a bad case of dry skin on my face and elbows. I have tried every over the counter skin cream and I really don’t have time to see a dermatologist. Can you suggest anything?

Audrey, Chicago, IL

Dear Audrey,

So sorry to hear about your dry skin; sounds serious especially knowing your special wedding day is in 5 weeks. Try using a freshly cut navel orange and rubbing it onto your skin. Sounds crazy, but it really works. The best time to rub the orange is right after your shower.

Q: Which fresh flowers will hold up best in my hair?

Elisa, Mt. Prospect, IL

Dear Elisa,

Avoid overly delicate flowers like lilies of the valley. The best choices are baby roses, dendrobium, stephanotis, freesia, and baby’s breath. Once the flowers are in, don’t touch them, as they might turn brown. Also, hairspray before you put the flowers in, so they spray won’t wilt them.

Q: The seating chart for my reception has me so stressed out. I have tried creating spreadsheets, but it’s still very confusing. Is there an easier way to handle this?

Jackie, Bartlett, IL

Dear Jackie,

You’re right about being stressed out; most brides’ heads are spinning when trying to organize who sits where for the reception. I am a bit of DIY person so therefore I use paper plates and sticky note pads when figuring out who should sit where at the reception.

Each paper plate is the table and each sticky note represents the guest’s names. Layout the plates on a large table and how they’ll be positioned at the reception. From there, you’ll be able to move guests around tables, without having to delete and add onto a confusing spreadsheet.

Always keep in mind that you will have last minute changes up until the night before your wedding.
