Estate Sale at Legendary Barrington Home

Estate Sale held in home rebuilt after devastating tornado in 1967.

C. Estate Sales will be conducting an estate sale at 22497 Old Barrington Road, Barrington, on Friday, Nov. 11 & Saturday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 6800 square foot custom built home with seven stall horse barn, pond and in-ground pool, will host a sale with fabulous items including furniture, crystal, clothing and art.

But this home is more than just these “things." Here is my story.

My family has lived in Barrington for 53 years. My folks moved to the “country” from Arlington Heights in 1958. My father, William “Red” Logue was from Chicago and dreamt of owning horses and land. My mother, Norma Jeanne Kelly, wanted to keep my dad happy and help my father achieve his dream.

On April 21, 1967 around 3 p.m., there was a fateful and lifesaving phone call.

A funnel cloud was headed toward our home. My dad was down the road at a friend’s house and called my mother, shouting to “get in the basement NOW." My mother did exactly as she was told. Five kids and a dog rushed to the basement, and less than three minutes later the lights went out and the tornado hit.

Then there was silence.

My mom told us we weren’t going anywhere until someone came to get us. What we didn’t know was we were in the eye of the tornado. Then, the tornado hit again. Finally, the terrible noise and sounds of crashing furniture and glass stopped. We heard loud voices “anybody in there?”

Truck drivers came to our rescue; they had been hiding in the gully on Route 22. My dad wasn’t able to get to us because the road had been blocked by downed electrical wires and trees. He counted our heads as we appeared. The entire house was destroyed but our family was safe, thanks to my dad!

From the traumatic experience, we learned resilience and that material things are just that...things.

After the shocking tornado, Red started plans for the next home that would sit proudly on these five acres of land on Old Barrington Road. He wouldn’t let a tornado deter his dream for himself and his family.

Nine short months later a grand brick Georgian a la “Gone with the Wind” was erected.  The stately home was the talk of the town. From the rubble rose a beautiful red brick home that became the fortress for our family and friends.

And so now, 44 years later, life has marched on. 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild have run through the halls, swam in the pool and fished in the ponds. But it is time to have another family enjoy this home.

So, with full disclosure, I am not only a fortunate daughter but the listing agent with Hunter’s Fairway Sotheby’s International Realty for this wonderful home. I encourage you to stop by and purchase a treasure or two!  But don’t stop there; take a look around this home and I’m sure you will be able to see the same dream that Red and Norma envisioned when this estate became a reality. And most of all, make sure to contact me if you’re ready to make your own stories and memories in this one of a kind home!
