LCAP Infuses Youth And Energy at Friendship Village

There’s an infusion of youth and energy each week as 55 area high school students volunteer on the campus of Friendship Village.  The high school seniors are participating in the District 211’s Learning Through Communication Action Program. The program, which is known as LCAP and includes Hoffman Estates, Conant, Schaumburg and Fremd High Schools, encourages high school seniors to volunteer at an area organization for a minimum of 20 hours.

The students who registered to volunteer at Friendship Village work in a variety of capacities across campus.  “Some of the students are using their technology skills to teach computers, or share their musical talents by playing an instrument during meal times,” said Jeff Rose, lifestyles manager of Friendship Village. “They also have been helping out in some of our programs like bowling, Wii bowling, arts and crafts,  sing-alongs and more.”

Prior to beginning their volunteer work, the students all completed a training session which included orientation and a tour and meet and greet.  Jeff said that this is the same training that all of the volunteers at Friendship Village receive.

LCAP is a very rewarding experience for everyone involved. “The residents really enjoy the energized volunteers,” said Jeff.  The volunteers, in return, value the time they spend at Friendship Village.  “We have some that stay on as volunteers after they’ve completed their requirements and even some that work here afterwards,” he said.
