MONTESSORI CHILDREN’S HOUSE WELCOMES BIRDS AND BUTTERFLIES WITH NEW CROP OF NATIVE PLANTS

North Barrington, IL – Staff, volunteers and students at Montessori Children’s House are planning a new Butterfly Garden at their facility this summer with funds from the Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Grant Program administered by Wild Ones: Native Plants, Natural Landscapes. Here everyone, but especially the children, will learn about native plants that have grown in this area for thousands of years, while getting a close-up view of butterflies, songbirds and other creatures that use the plants for food or shelter. Site preparation will take place this summer.

Seeds for Education grants include technical assistance and advice from local experts. The grants honor Lorrie Otto who originated the modern era of school garden projects in the 1970s in the Milwaukee area.

“We are so pleased to support the children of Montessori Children’s House as they learn more about pollination, the water cycle, and enjoy the beauty of the school grounds with their project.”, said MCH Parent, Nicole Plenge-Gilday

Montessori Children’s House Teacher, Miss Rukmal Wanigasinghe emphasized that,  “This will be an exciting hands-on experience for our young students. Children need real experience with nature, and only nature can teach the true lessons of the wonders of life.”

From its humble beginnings in Italy in 1907, the Montessori approach to education has spread throughout the world. It is based on the premise that children learn and grow best in a respectful atmosphere that cultivates independence and self-motivation. At the Montessori Children’s House of North Barrington, our Montessori certified teachers work to create a beautifully equipped and multi-sensory environment and then observe how each child responds to the activities. The Montessori approach encourages self-discipline, self-knowledge, independence, academic skills, problem solving ability, and an enthusiasm for learning.

Montessori Children’s House started in 1970 and has been serving the young children and families of this community ever since.  Our year-round programs include a Parent-Child community (Ages Birth – 35 months), a Toddler class for 2-3 year olds, and half day and full day programs for 3-6 year olds - through the Kindergarten Year.
