The Residents of Friendship Village Give Back To Their Community

The residents of Friendship Village in Schaumburg have enjoyed the holiday season while spending time giving back to their community.  Earlier this month, residents and staff signed and decorated 240 Christmas cards to be sent to our troops. These cards were mailed in packages by volunteers at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit in Elk Grove Village through the Packages4Patriots program.

The residents of Friendship Village in Schaumburg held their annual Holiday Household Item Collection for Children’s Home and Aid. Jeannette Magdaleno, life long learning and volunteer coordinator for Friendship Village said that the retirement community has close ties to Children’s Home and Aid, a leading child and family service agency. “For the past five years, our residents have been volunteering at their daycare in Schaumburg.  They rock and feed the babies and read to and play with the toddlers,” said Magdaleno.

The items collected during Friendship Village’s Holiday Household Item Collection were on the agency’s wish list for their Parent Pantry.  Items sought included diapers, baby wipes, paper towels, laundry detergent, shampoo and more.  “Parents who have children at the day care can earn points for items in the pantry by reading to their children at home, or participating in other activities suggested to them by social workers. Our residents more than 800 personal toiletry items, which we then delivered last week,” said Magdaleno. “Our residents recognize the importance of volunteering. It keeps them healthy and active and gives them the opportunity to give back to the community.”
