Community Corner

Around the World in One Trip

The Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club is hosting the first annual International Festival in downtown Barrington on July 6 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The festival will showcase cultures that can be found around the world.

Barrington area residents will be able to experience multiple cultures from around the globe all in one day.

The Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club will host the first annual International Festival on July 6 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event will take place in the tents set up at the Barrington train station, 201 S. Spring St.

“The members of the club thought the International Festival would be a very unique event for the area that hasn’t previously been provided for this community," Rotary member Mike Lauzon said.

The new event appeals to people of all ages and is packed with activities, demonstrations, music, performers and cuisine for all to enjoy.

Many don't realize that Barrington is composed of individuals from many diverse cultures throughout the world. The Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club hopes the festival will serve an avenue for people to recognize and appreciate the different nationalities that have come to the area.

“We want to embrace the diversity, Lauzon said.

Not only does the community benefit by learning about various cultures, but the participating groups will gain from the festival as well. These organizations and co-ops will be selling handmade items made by their members, ranging from Guatemalan wears to Indian scarves.

Rain or shine, the event will be in full swing under the shelter of the tent. The Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club anticipates a successful outcome for its inaugural event.

“Given that this is our first festival, we really wanted to put a focus on the community itself. We’re going have the Barrington Area Library giving a presentation, and all the vendors are local people. We wanted to showcase the diversity of our international community.”

Admission to International Festival is free until 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., the cost is $2 per adult, and $5 per family. Food plates will cost $8 and include beverages like sangria and iced coffee. Snacks are $4. Kids can enjoy hot dogs, chips and pop for $1 each.
