Extreme Heat Puts Dog Show on Back Burner for a Week

The 6th annual Children's Dog Show set to bow-wow audience instead on July 27.

Extreme heat topping 90 degrees has forced the Barrington Park District to postpone its sixth annual Children’s Dog Show.

The event was scheduled to take place July 20 but since has been pushed back to Wednesday, July 27, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. at

The Children’s Dog Show originated in 2005 as part of the Barrington Park District’s 75th anniversary celebration. As Recreation Supervisor Kim Sweeney recalls, “We had such a huge turnout and so many requests for it that we’ve done it every summer.”

Pups and their owners will start the show with a parade of the participating dogs to the fitting tune of Baha Men’s Who Let the Dogs Out, before each dog is presented to the judges and the audience. Children ages 2 to 16 will explain what makes their dog so special and unique.

Judges will present competitors with awards ranging from “Best in Show” to “Longest Ears” to “Best Dressed.” While some dogs will perform tricks and others will don costumes, every dog will leave with an award.

Dogs will be given plenty of water as well as a goodie bag filled with rawhides, dog bowls, toothbrushes, treats, and more. Lucky winners can even receive a gift certificate to Bonejour Pet Salon for a spa day of their own. Food is available for purchase, and guests are welcome to bring their own cooler as well. While picnic tables are on hand, lawn chairs and towels are suggested items to bring for extra seating. Leashes are required, and bags to pick up after dogs will be available.

While the forecast seems clear, the event will be moved into the pavilion at Citizen’s Park if rain becomes an issue. The pavilion has air conditioning to allow pets and guests to remain comfortable during the show. Sweeney encourages all to attend if they are looking for something fun to do on a Wednesday night.

It is a “laid back and fun event for children and families to enjoy.”

Thirty dogs will be able to participate in the show, but all dogs and families are welcome to attend. Those who wish to enroll their dog in the show must pre-register at the Barrington Park District for $5. Immediately following the dog show will be the Summer Concert Series free Concert in the Park at 7 p.m. featuring Bopology, a jazz and blues band.
