Friends Holding Fundraiser for Steve Bimbi, Barrington Mailman Injured in Car Accident

A fundraiser dinner will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, to benefit mailman Steve Bimbi, who was injured in an accident last month.

Crystal Lake resident Steve Bimbi has delivered mail for the U.S. Postal Service in the Barrington area for past 22 years.

On Sept. 19, Bimbi was involved in a severe accident while driving his mail truck on Route 59 north of Barrington. Having just started his day, Bimbi's truck hydroplaned in the rainy conditions while avoiding a car that had crossed in front of him.

The mail truck struck a tree, and Bimbi, injured by the impact, needed ambulance transport to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. An orthopedic surgeon repaired Bimbi's broken femur and broken pelvis, but he now faces physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Friends are reaching out to help the Bimbi family, which includes his wife Renate and their two sons, while Steve works to recover. The community is invited to attend a fundraiser dinner sponsored by Nick's Pizza from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Nick's Pizza is donating 100% of their net sales profit from all dine-in, carry-out, and delivery orders on that day in support of Steve Bimbi. The silent auction and basket raffle proceeds will be directly donated to the Bimbi family, as well, said friend Laura Selby.

"Steve had his ups and downs, and everyone was praying for him," Selby said in an e-mail. "He is a fighter and he isn't giving up. He has a positive attitude about working hard to regain his strength. His next phase of recovery will include physical therapy and rehabilitation."

Selby said there is a huge community that surrounds the family including friends, former classmates, teammates, fellow coaches, and family members of Steve and Renate Bimbi and their boys, Jake and Zach.

"We have all come together to provide support and contributions to the Bimbi family during this traumatic time in their lives and ask for your support," Selby said. "We reach out today and ask that you please join us in our endeavors to reach our fundraising goals."
