Garlands First Centenarian May Hold Secret to Aging Well

Barrington residents ready to celebrate her milestone birthday in September.

New science could lead to very long lives as geneticists uncover secrets that could help extend life for us all, according to recent media reports. While living longer is desirable, many would agree that living well is just as important. But what if you could have both?

Betty Catlin of Barrington is a shining example of living a long and healthy life. She will join the growing number of centenarians worldwide when she turns 100 in September.

Catlin, who moved to The Garlands of Barrington in 2002 when it first opened, will also be the first Garlands member to reach the 100th birthday milestone. The lifestyle that she enjoys today is fuller and more active than the lives of many people half her age.

She works out seven days a week with friends at the fitness center at The Garlands.

“I’m amazed at how good I feel,” Catlin said. “I have always enjoyed walking and now I use the NuStep (a recumbent cross-trainer) daily, which has allowed me to continue to walk well.”

Besides the physical benefits of exercise, Catlin said she enjoys connecting with friends while at the gym. Plus staying healthy means she is able to enjoy the many intellectual, social and spiritual pursuits offered at The Garlands. She enjoys learning new concepts at Life Long Learning lectures and attending social events such as concerts and Happy Hours.

Her “don’t hold back” attitude, lifelong curiosity and thirst for adventure are personal traits that are commonly associated with happiness and longevity.

Catlin has travelled the world with visits to Egypt, the North Cape in Norway, France and Italy.  More recently she has viewed the earth from a new perspective while on a hot air balloon ride with her daughter and granddaughter.

The only time that Catlin takes time off from exercising is when family members stop over. Happily, with six children, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, family visits are frequent. The Garlands will host its first 100th Birthday party in September for Catlin with her family and Garlands friends, neighbors and staff.
