This weekend is the Barrington Park District’s annual Family Campout from Saturday, June 18 through Sunday, June 19. Held at, the event starts at 5 p.m Saturday and ends at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

“Last year, a father thanked me five or six times for holding the event," Barrington Park District Supervisor Kent Hengels said. "He told me the campout meant a lot to him because he never had this opportunity as a kid. He said his family always loved it and looked forward to it every year. Even if it’s a family’s first time camping out, it’s a great way to try something new.”

The campout is a great event for beginner campers as it offers indoor plumbing and access to the pavilion. The Langendorf park pool has showers and lockers available for those who decide to swim. The cost is $15 for in district residents and $18 for out of district guests with the fee covering all food, games, pool access, and staff assistance for the campout. Families supply their own tents to sleep in. The event averages around 10-15 families a year, offering a great way to meet other families around the community.

Upon arrival, kids can participate in activities such as capture the flag, bocce ball, and swimming.

“This is an experience for kids to come out of a comfort zone and use their imaginations," explained Hengels.

Dinner will be served around 5:30 or 6 p.m. and will include burgers, hot dogs, chips, and beverages. Once it becomes dark, families can enjoy a campfire and roasting s’mores. In the morning, donuts and juice with be served in the pavilion. Families are also welcome to bring extra snacks or games.

When it comes to weather precautions, the park district staff remains optimistic.

“In all the years we’ve done the campout, we’ve never canceled it. There has been rain in the past, but we will run it rain or shine. Families are welcome to set up their tents in the pavilion or tree house if they ultimately decide not to rough it outside,” Hengels said.
