Scrounging the Freezer Week

Does a meal of frozen pork, frozen corn and frozen waffles sound familiar? That's what happens when we try to empty the freezer!

Every so often my family has what we like to call a "scrounging the freezer" week, meaning everything we eat comes from what we have already bought and is crammed in our freezer and fridge.

I often invoke this plan when we know we are going to be going out of town and I don't want to stock up on perishables that we won't get to, or when we are heading into a long holiday and I know we will be eating outside the house a lot.

With the big Fourth of July weekend upon us, I gave the family fair warning that our meals might be a little "creative" this week.  A sample dinner, such as the one we had last night, might be frozen pulled pork from an earlier summer BBQ, with frozen corn and frozen waffles thrown in for a bun for the kids.  Really, I do not think they can eat a meal without some sort of bread, so as long as they get their carbs, there are no complaints!

It does become sort of a game to sort through months of what I have crammed into our small freezer.  It is very narrow and I can hardly find anything when I need it.  But, when I think of the money I am saving by not doing my usual grocery shopping for the week, I get a feeling of overjoy - like we are roughing it by not going to the store for ONE week!

We are having breakfast for dinner tonight (eggs, pancakes and breakfast sausage).  And, maybe again tomorrow night.  But, I love the feeling of seeing our overcrowded freezer slim down to nothing, because as whole, I really hate to eat any type of frozen food.

I wonder throughout these "scrounging the freezer" weeks how the heck I managed to collect all of this food that just sits there.  But, the end is in sight!  We will be eagerly anticipating our fresh fruit salad, fresh corn on the cob, and fresh burger at a BBQ soon.
