Summer Hair Ideas

Taking care of your summer hair.

I have done hair for quite a long time, and one of the most important things at this time of year to remember is hair care.  That is Care with a capital C.   If you are coloring your hair, protect your investment  this summer with some of the following ideas.

One of the most noticeable signs of sun damaged hair is texture.  Imagine your hair shaft as a cigar in a clear cellophane wrapper, clear shiny and smooth and it shows off the cigar.  Well after the wrapper gets crushed and crinkled, it takes away from what it originally looked like.  This is the same as a your hair shaft.  Your hair shaft has a “clear” outside layer called the cuticle.  When the cuticle gets damaged it makes your hair appear dull and damaged.  Colored hair with exposure to sun becomes much more damaged quickly without proper care.

Everyone makes sure they have all there sunscreen for their skin.  It is so important to consider a sunscreen for your hair.  Ask your stylist for a hair care product with sunscreen.  They are available and worth the investment to protect your hair color.

If you color your hair regularly don’t hold off longer in between your appointments, as your stylist can better assist you in maintaining your hair’s health if you stay on schedule.

Use sulphate free products.  Sulphate products tend to increase the porosity level of your hair and cause damage and only excel the loss of your hair color especially in the summer.

Wet your hair down before you go into chlorinated water.  This minimizes the chance of chlorine build up.

Carry a large comb or hair pick to detangle your hair after swimming to get rid of tangles and minimize breakage.

The weather may not seem like summer, but it is coming, is your hair ready.
