Train Accident Heros Honored in Barrington

Barrington citizens, first responders recognized for coming to the aid of 11-year-old Dominic Szymanski after he was hit by a Metra train.

The best qualities of humanity were exemplified in those who helped 11-year-old  said Barrington Police Chief Jerry Libit. 

Citizens who helped included Barrington residents Lindy Thomas and Trevor James. They were honored as Good Samaritans with a proclamation at the May 13 Barrington village board meeting recognizing their part in coming to the rescue of Dominic. 

The proclamation also recognized the efforts of Union Pacific railway employees and the follow-up work at the scene of the accident by police officers and paramedics. Without the efforts of Thomas, James and others, Szymanski may not have survived being hit by a 150-ton passenger train that rainy Friday afternoon.

Union Pacific railway workers Rich Gladkowski and Jamie Hansen were honored. Police first responders honored were Lori Allsteadt, Jeniffer Whitcher and Garrett Oberkircher. Paramedics honored were Eric Lea, Kyle Racina, Jim Goodwin and Chris Kelly.

Chief Libit noted that they overcame the shock and trauma of the situation and took action.

"Their efforts led to Dominic's survival and minimized his permanent injuries," Libit said. 

Dominic posed for photos with his rescuers, between tearful moments, and thanked them all for coming to his aid that day.
