This week features plenty of outdoor activities and festivals that are family-friendly, plus a couple of benefit events for the adults.

Why go: Love being on the water? Come test out new canoes or kayaks, take an instructional clinic and learn about local canoe and kayak clubs and adventure trips.

Where/When: , 11000 Ruth Road, Huntley. Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  

Why go: Prepare the family's bikes for summer and have your kids test their peddling skills at the bike rodeo! Children can get their bikes registered and safety inspected, and then test them out at the riding skill rodeo stations. Yee-haw!

Where/When: , 710 W. Northwest Highway, Barrington. Saturday, May 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.         

Why go: Ambrosia Euro American Patisserie hosts a fundraiser for Chicago Chef Rob Macey, who is currently recovering from brain surgery. Guests will enjoy music by local artist Mike Herndon, food and pastries and a silent auction.

Pricing: Tickets $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Call 847-304-8278 for tickets.

Where/When: , 511 Lake Zurich Road, Barrington. Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why go: A multitude of nature-based activities will entertain kids and families, including a hunt with the Indian Guides and Princesses, bird walks, owl pellet dissection, yoga classes, live raptor demonstration and a hike along Cuba Marsh Trail to look for aquatic life.

Pricing: Free.

Where/When: , 76 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake. Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.       

Why go: Celebrate the earth at the 2nd Annual Eco Block Party! Eco-friendly groups including Clean Air Counts, McHenry County Bicycle advocates and the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will be on hand for education and to answer questions. Plus, kids will be entertained with a puppet show, a clown and crafts, and adults can purchase perennials and even recycle their used shoes.

Pricing: Free admission.

Where/When: , 511 Lake Zurich Road, Barrington. Sunday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.   

Why go: View art and demonstrations by local artists, enjoy live music, food and entertain the little ones at the children’s art table.

Pricing: Free admission.    

 

Where/When: , 1300 Cunat Court, Lake in the Hills. Sunday, May 22 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.    

Why go: Enjoy crafting for a cause. Reserve a table spot for $35, and get 11 hours of uninterrupted scrapping time, a potluck dinner (please bring a dish to share), beverages (BYOB if you want adult beverages) and a scrapbook garage sale, where you can swap or sell your unwanted scrapping items. All proceeds benefit the programs at The Northern Illinois Center for Autism.
