Weekend Planner: Memorial Day Fun

Enjoy a stay-cation this holiday weekend, with fun local events including an art fair, a farmer's market and a magic show for the kids.

Family Friendly!

Where/When: , 856 Pyott Road, Crystal Lake. Thursday, May 26 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Why go: Moms and dads, take the night off cooking and treat the family to pizza for a good cause. Nick’s Pizza & Pub in Crystal Lake hosts this fundraiser for the Cary Grove Trojans Lacrosse Club, with 15 percent of all sales being donated to the club. To participate, diners must present this flyer.

Where/When: , 201 N. Harrison St., Algonquin. Weekly on Thursdays through September 29 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.     

Why go: After a long winter break, farmer’s market season is officially back! Algonquin kicks off the first day of their Riverfront Park market, which is held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekly on Thursdays. 

Pricing: Free to attend, prices for products vary.

Where/When: , 100 E. Station St., Barrington. Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.   

Why go: Enjoy browsing unique art pieces by over 140 artists, including a youth showcase with works by artists ages 6 to 18 years old. Live music, food and kid’s activities like painting and a scavenger hunt make it a fun-filled day for the whole family. 

Pricing: Free admission.  

 



For The Kids!

Where/When: The Green Spot, Woodstock Square Mall Building, 110 S. Johnson St., Suite 104, Woodstock. Saturday, May 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.           

Why go: The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County host a magic show at their used book store The Green Spot. Kids ages 6 and older and their families are invited to view magic tricks, explore the “magic” of reading and browse the books with “magically” low prices. Proceeds from The Green Spot helps benefit the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, a non-profit organization.

Pricing: Free to attend.    

 



Where/When: , 330 N. Main St., Crystal Lake. Sunday, May 29 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Why go: Enjoy a pleasant afternoon hike at Windgate Prairie, a protected gravel hill prairie that is home to several rare and endangered plant and animal species. The Friends of the Nature Center will lead this monthly hike that celebrates the land they work hard to protect. All are welcome, registration required.

Where/When: Parade starts at the intersection of S. Cook St. & E. Main St., Barrington. Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m.  

Why go: Take time to reflect on what Memorial Day is really about (no, not the day off work.) The Barrington VFW hosts this Memorial Day Parade, ending with a short service at Evergreen Cemetery to honor those that have died in service to their country.
