Weekend Planner: Solar Observing at Stillman Nature Center

Labor Day weekend brings local festivals, shows, art exhibits and other events.

Where/When: Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell St., Arlington Heights. Friday, September 2 at 8 p.m.   

Why go: Live out your Footloose fanatasies in person - Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael, also known as The Bacon Brothers, perform at the Metropolis Performng Arts Centre. The band draw audiences in with their soulful rock music - sweet dance moves may or may not be included.

Where/When: , 5200 Miller Road, Lake in the Hills. Friday, September 2 from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Saturday, September 3 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Sunday, September 4 from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.          

Why go: Lake in the Hills’ annual three-day festival is packed with entertainment, food, activities and family-friendly fun. Some signature events include the Sunset 5K run/walk, the Melon Propellin’ Competition and a skateboard competition, among others. Also, the whole family can enjoy carnival food and rides, an arts and crafts show, kids activities at Kids’ Korner, live music and a finale fireworks show. Pricing: Free to enter and enjoy - food, beverages and carnival games/rides are the only attractions that cost money.

 



Where/When: , 451 W. Terra Cotta Avenue, Crystal Lake. Saturday, September 3 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.   

Why go: The Knights of Columbus are hosting this event as a thank you to the local community for their support. On the menu is sweet corn, hot dogs and beverages. This event is free and open to the public.

Pricing: Free.  

 



Where/When: , 12015 Mill St., Huntley. Saturday, September 3 at 7 p.m.          

Why go: Enjoy GreenRoom Improv’s signature Unscripted show, an off-the-cuff, high-energy performance. Audiences will take part in the show through their suggestions and even getting on stage! Improvised songs accompanied by a live band are also part of the fun. 

Pricing: $12 for adults, $8 students/seniors, tickets available at the door. 

 



Where/When: , 33 W. Penny Road, South Barrington. Sunday, September 4 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.             

Why go: Join the Stillman Nature Center and The Northwest Suburban Astronmers in an outdoor viewing of the nearest star. The organizations will provide the equipment, including special telescopes and filters, so participants can see the star’s sunspots and prominences. After the viewing attendants can go on a self-guided or guided hike, and can also stay for a potluck picnic (please bring a dish to pass if you wish to stay.)

Where/When: 1 Market Square Court (Market Square and Western Avenue by the Lake Forest Train Station), Lake Forest. Sunday, September 4 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Monday, September 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.   

Why go: Spend the final days of your Labor Day weekend at Art Fair on the Square. Over 180 artists will be on hand to show, discuss and sell their art, plus special exhibits include an Emerging Artist Studio, showcasing high school and college student’s art, and a Creation Station, an interactive arts and crafts area for both the young and the more mature. Free admission and parking too!

Pricing: Free admission and parking, varying prices points for artwork.
