Candy Land Themed Dancers to Take the Stage

The Barrington Park District's Youth Dance Recital will take place on May 22.

The children’s board game “Candy Land” will take on a new meaning this weekend as the Barrington Park District’s Youth Dance Recital takes the stage.

This year’s theme is Candy Land, meaning even the smallest of dancers will be dressed as sweet treats.

“We’re really excited,” Barrington Park District Recreation Supervisor Kim Sweeney said. “All of the dancers are based around Candy Land. They will all be different kinds of candies like gummy bears and chocolates.”

The recital, which kicks off May 22 at 2:30 p.m. in the Barrington High School auditorium, will feature dancers as young as three years old through teenagers.

“Act one is a half hour long. It’s all of the tiny ballerinas, the three and four year olds,” Sweeney explained. “Then we have a short intermission, and Act two is the remainder. The entire show is about an hour long.”

The dancers have been taking lessons since November to prepare for the recital. They were all signed up for the park district’s winter/spring session.

“Something that makes us unique is that this is a very low cost program. Costumes are only $40 and there are no try-outs,” Sweeney said.

The park district also offers a summer and fall dance program. The summer program does not have a recital, but those registered for the fall classes will participate in what Sweeney calls a low-key holiday show.

Tickets to the Candy Lane themed recital are $2. The park district is asking that everyone pre-purchases tickets at the administrative desk located at 235 Lions Drive. Tickets will not be sold the day of the recital. For more information, visit barringtonparkdistrict.org
