Senior Health: Fall Prevention Awareness Fair at Good Shepherd
SENIOR HEALTH: FALL PREVENTION AWARENESS FAIR
Barrington, IL- In honor of National Fall Prevention Awareness Day, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is hosting a health fair focusing on the importance of fall prevention. The event will take place on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 from 9 – 10:30 am in the Meadow/Prairie room at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, 450 W. Highway 22, Barrington, Illinois.

One of three Americans, age 65 and older, accidentally falls every year. In this age group, falls are the most common cause of non-fatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. In 2008, there were 19,700 fatalities resulting from accidental falls. These falls cause moderate to severe injuries, such as concussions and hip fractures, and incur billions of dollars in medical costs every year.

Fortunately, there are ways to minimize this major health concern. The Fall Prevention Awareness Fair will feature various booths with information and screenings including blood pressure screenings and tips to maintain a strong, healthy lifestyle. A professional trainer from the Good Shepherd Hospital’s Health & Fitness Center will discuss strength training strategies to prevent falls. The fair will also host a physical therapy specialist, podiatrist for foot care, and pharmacists with instruction on medications and side effects.
