Barrington, IL, March 6, 2014 –– The Barrington Dance Academy’s master ballet instructor Guillermo Leyva was honored with the Outstanding Teacher Award at the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) 2014 Regional Competition in Bloomington, Indiana last month. The YAGP is the world’s largest and most prestigious student ballet scholarship competition. Held annually around the world, the competition is open to all dance students. Leyva was recognized for his exceptional work as an instructor and performance coach.
Leyva works with students at several dance academies in the Chicagoland area, including Barrington Dance Academy’s intermediate and advanced level ballet students. Leyva began his training as a student at the Professional School of the Arts in Camaguey, Cuba. He has danced professionally with Ballet de Camaguey, Ballet Monterrey, Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Ballet de Santiago, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and others. He served as the ballet coach for the musical Billy Elliot. Leyva is currently on staff at Barrington Dance Academy and offers master ballet classes for intermediate and advanced students on Saturdays at the Academy. He also serves as choreographer and rehearsal coach for the Barrington Youth Dance Ensemble, where he frequently sets original choreography on the company. Leyva is known for his good-natured, individualized approach to teaching.
