Cuba Township Assessor Offers Help for Flood Damaged Properties

Flooded and storm damaged properties eligible for tax breaks.

Cuba Township Assessor Rebecca Tonigan said the area was hit hard by the flooding with many roads still closed and she wants property owners to be aware that they may be eligible for property tax reassessments.

“The flood in 2007 was not nearly as bad as this one,” Tonigan said. “We have been trying to look at aerials to see how many homes are still encased in water.

Governor Quinn declared Lake County a disaster area on April 18. This allows property owners to request a reassessment of any taxable property which was substantially damaged by the disaster.  This can also allow a reduction when a property is uninhabitable for a period of time as a result of this disaster event.

If a property has received damage, the taxpayer must contact their township assessor and complete the PTAX- 245, Disaster Area Reassessment application.

“There is still a question of how much relief is available. Some homes might need to be demolished. Others may have hundreds of thousands in damage,” Tonigan said.

Tonigan invites residents to come to the Cuba Township office for tax relief help.

“The sooner they contact us, the sooner we can help them,” she said.

Cuba Township residents can call Tonigan at (847) 381-1120.
