I Have in My Hand a List of Names - Senator Joseph McCarthy
A little known Senator found out by accident that, when he warned of communist infiltration in our government, he made front page headlines. And he found that the more outlandish the claims, the larger the headlines. The United States of the 1950s was afraid of the Soviet Union, afraid of Communism, and afraid the Cold War might turn into an atomic bomb attack by our enemies. Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy became the human symbol of those fears with his frequent dramatic assertions that the U.S. government was protecting countless Communist agents and supporters.
Discover how our country defined and reacted to the Communist threat and learn about the man who, thanks to Washington Post political cartoonist Herbert Block, brought the world "McCarthyism" into our language with Harper College presenter Gary Midkiff. This is a study of our country when it was very frightened by Communism and how two men, Joseph Welch and Edward R. Murrow, spoke out against McCarthy and for decency and fairness.
