Barrington Prepared- Students asked to lead the way!

This week the Noon Rotary is sponsoring Barrington Prepared!

This week is “Barrington Prepared” Students Leading The Way.

April 22-27th is BARRINGTON PREPARED week where the Barrington Noon Rotary Club and Reese Mates are challenging all area students to learn about disasters, prepare at home and spread the word in their neighborhood. Barrington Village officials are supporting this project by speaking at nightly meetings at Countryside School 7pm-8pm to give parents and children much needed emergency information.

As, many of you know, I am a survivor of a tornado that destroyed my family’s home on April 21, 1967. I wrote about it here http://barrington-il.patch.com/articles/estate-sale-at-legendary-barring...

So, naturally, I was more than happy to speak at the meeting last night. I didn’t want to scare the kids but wanted to make sure that they are always aware of the weather and to be prepared!

David Kalesz with Allegretti-Kalesz Allstate Insurance Agency, also told the audience that unfortunately, he hears from his clients after a disaster happens, he wants to remind us to make a meeting place plan, change your batteries in your smoke detectors, stay inside during rain and wind storms and never play in flood waters since the water could be charged with electricity or you could be swept away by the current.

Another guest speaker was Robert Roig from R-evolution Living. His company designs and builds disaster proof housing and structures. Bob told us that the homes they build can survive a F5 tornado, a Category 5 hurricane, earthquakes, fire and even sink holes.

We also announced that Hunter’s Fairway Sotheby’s International Realty and I will be representing the sales of these disaster proof homes. Finally, a home that can be saved along with the people that live in it!

Overall, it was such an informative meeting. Sometimes, I feel people don’t believe we could have such a horrific disaster in our town. Though, when they hear my story about surviving a F4 tornado right here in Barrington, they do pause and hopefully they will heed the advice and make a plan-be aware and be prepared!
