505 North - Escape The Black Friday Madness!

The Barrington Area Library will be open on Black Friday, November 25. Relax and get away from the shopping madness with a Friends' book sale, sweet treats and other surprises.

There's no denying that "Black Friday" holiday shopping has become something of a social phenomenon in this country (and others, based on what I've seen on the Internet). Stores are opening earlier and earlier, and many shoppers seem willing to do whatever it takes to score a great price on a flat-screen TV, laptop or other goodies.

However, if standing in line for hours, driving to the mall at midnight, and pushing and shoving amongst sleep-deprived hordes of bargain hunters is not your idea of a fun holiday weekend, the Barrington Area Library has an alternative. While we are closed on Thursday, November 24, we will be open all day on Friday, November 25. What could be a better alternative to retail madness than a (relatively) quiet, cozy, fun or productive day at the library?

If you can't resist shopping but loathe the big box store mentality, our Friends of the Library are holding a special, mini sale on Black Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM. Along with gently used books, you'll find DVDs, maps and even a selection of picture frames for sale. To add to the festive, holiday spirit, the library will provide some sweet treats to enjoy while you browse.

We've got other surprises in store but, gosh, if I tell you about them here, they wouldn't be surprises! We know lots of kids are home from school next week, so remember we are the perfect neighborhood destination on those days, too. On Wednesday, November 23, our littlest friends can enjoy storytimes at 10:15 AM (children 2-3 years with a caregiver) and 11 AM (children 2-5 years with a caregiver). Kids of all ages can have fun hunting for Tommy the Turkey amongst the stacks of books next week - gobble, gobble, where will he be next?

So leave the early bird specials and door busters to the shopping fanatics, and make the Barrington Area Library your Thanksgiving week destination instead. You'll end up with more money in your wallet and, I think, a bigger smile on your face and your family's faces, too.
