Award Winning Journalist to Host Peace Forum

Roger Thurow will host the event at the Barrington Area Library on Sept. 30.

The Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club will host a peace forum titled, "Seeking solutions to the causes of world conflict: Hunger." Award winning journalist Roger Thurow, author of The Last Hunger Season, will examine the “hunger season” for African farmers, which marks the time of year they run out of food from previous harvests until their next harvest begins. The presentation will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30 from 2-4 p.m. at the , 505 Northwest Highway, Barrington,

Thurow, hunger activist, was a reporter for The Wall Street Journal for 30 years.  He is co-author, along with Scott Kilman, of the critically acclaimed book Enough: Why the World’s Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty. The duo’s coverage on famine in Africa became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting in 2004. In 2005, they were honored by the United Nations for their reporting on humanitarian and development issues, and in 2009 received the Action Against Humanitarian Award.

The Last Hunger Season highlights smallholder farmers who produce a majority of the food in Africa, yet lack the resources to feed their families. Smallholder farmers, many of which women, live life the way of a century ago, without access to developed seeds, fertilizer, proper equipment used for roads and facilities, while lacking the credit, and insurance.
