Pumpkin Picking and Carving Tips from Goebbert's

Goebbert's Farm and Garden Center provides some helpful tips on choosing a pumpkin and carving it correctly.

Picking the Perfect Pumpkin

  • Choose a pumpkin that feels firm and heavy for its size.
  • Choose a pumpkin that has consistent coloring throughout.
  • Turn the pumpkin over and place pressure on the bottom with your thumbs. If it flexes or gives your pumpkin is not fresh.
  • Look for soft spots, mold, wrinkles or open cuts that would indicate damage or early spoilage.
  • Choose a pumpkin with a solidly attached stem.
  • A green stem indicates a freshly harvested pumpkin.
  • Place your pumpkin on a flat surface to check to see if it will sit flat after being carved.

Pumpkin Carving Tips

  • Start with the right tools. A arving knife, scoop to pull the insides out, and an X-Acto knife for creating the face. This will all help make the carving process easier.
  • Cut the hole on the bottom. Instead of cutting your hole around the stem, try the bottom for a cleaner look and more stable jack-o-lantern.
  • Place fragrant herbs or spices inside your pumpkin to have your jack-o-lantern playing as a light and air freshener.
  • Throw a carving party to get everyone in on the fun!

How to Make your Pumpkin Out Last the Rest

  • Soak carved pumpkins in cold water with a splash of bleach for several hours.  Towel dry inside and out to help prevent mold and deter insects while keeping the pumpkin fresh.
  • Rub a thin layer of petroleum jelly over the cut edges to seal in freshness.  Water evaporating out of the pumpkin will cause it to look shriveled.
  • In colder climates, it is also helpful to bring your pumpkins into the garage overnight so they do not freeze.
