Are You Ready to Be a Caregiver?

Caring for an Aging Parent Can be a Challenge

It’s not unusual to see baby boomers playing the role of caretaker for their parents.  Some are well prepared.  They live nearby and are actively involved in their parent’s lives.  They know who Mom or Dad’s physicians are, know their prescriptions and know if they have any allergies. They have knowledge of Mom or Dad’s finances and what they can afford.  They know where their parents’ important papers are stored so they can be readily accessed.  They know whether their parent has Long Term Care Insurance, what it covers and when it can be used.

But for most families this is not the case.  The adult children have very limited knowledge of the above. They have not been actively involved as their parents age.  They have not had a honest conversation with their parents so they have no idea what their parents’ wishes are.  This can leave them in a panic as they try to come up the learning curve during a crisis.

Geriatric Care Managers help adult children who have been thrust into the caregiver role.  In some cases we help the family prepare a care plan which they can then implement to meet their parent’s needs.  In others, we help execute the plan by engaging in-home care caregivers, arranging for special equipment to be brought into the home and assisting in the overall medical management of their loved one.
