Harold Lipofsky, 91, Former Trustee and Chamber Head, Dies

Lipofsky, a WWII veteran and life-long Barrington resident, was also a founding member of the Barrington Rotary Club.

Harold E. Lipofsky, 91, born in Barrington, died February 28 while vacationing in Florida.  He was the son of Samuel and Bessie Lipofsky who founded Lipofsky’s Department Store in Barrington in 1896.  He continued to run the store with his brother Henry and over the years his sister Irene and brothers Franklin and Bernard were part of the family business.  Lipofsky’s was destroyed by fire in 1989.

Mr. Lipofsky was a WWII veteran stationed in Italy.  He was a past Commander of Barrington VFW Post 7706.  He was past District 6440 Governor of Rotary International and founding and longest member of the Barrington Rotary Club.  He was a Trustee of the Village of Barrington and past President of the Barrington Chamber of Commerce.  Mr. Lipofsky was the recipient of the Barrington High School Distinguished Alumni Award.  He was a Trustee of the Wilmering Scout Cabin and an active supporter of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in Barrington.  He led the Barrington March of Dimes campaign for many years.

Mr. Lipofsky was the wonderful and fun uncle of Beverly, Barbara (Richard), Susan (Eddie), Marvin, Louis (Marion), Barton (Judy), Joseph (Pam), Philip (Judy), the great uncle of Lisa, Ariel, Dan, Steffen, Sandra, great great uncle of many, and Kazimierz (Casey) Chmielewski was his devoted friend.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Bessie Lipofsky, his sister Irene (Sidney) Kramer and his brothers Henry (Mildred), Franklin (Lillian) and Bernard (Zelda) Lipofsky.

Graveside service Friday 2:30 pm at Zion Gardens (Section K), 3600 N. Narragansett Avenue, Chicago.  Future memorial service to be announced.
