Obituary: Evelyn Elizabeth Hammond


Evelyn Elizabeth Hammond, 92, of Barrington, died, September 17 in Barrington. She was born on April 26, 1921, to F. Ray and Beatrice Wilson, in a small town in southern Ohio, Harrisonville, OH.
 
Musically gifted from an early age, Evelyn started playing the piano at the age of 3. She went on to study piano and music at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Capital University, Columbus OH, and she studied the pipe organ in Zurich, Switzerland.

Upon returning from Europe in 1949, she played the piano professionally and met her future husband, Peter. He would go nightly to watch her play and she finally agreed to date. They were married in 1951 and shared 53 wonderful years of marriage together.

Evelyn and Peter started their married life in Leawood, KS, then moved to Mt. Prospect, Riverside, CT, and spent 40 years in Inverness. Most recently, Evelyn resided in Barrington at The Garlands of Barrington where she was a very active member and loved her time there.
 
Evelyn was often seen at the family’s well-known Barrington business, Peter Daniel Apparel for Men and Women, which Peter founded in 1973. Evelyn and Peter were also active in many clubs and organizations including The Inverness Golf Club, The Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and The Union League Club of Chicago.

Having lost her mother at the age of 5, motherhood was a cherished role for her. She had three daughters and was always a warm and caring mother to them. Evelyn is survived by her loving children, Elizabeth (Carl) Johanson, Lake Barrington IL, Rebecca Vizzone, Lake Barrington IL, and Bridget (James) Couch, Deer Park, IL; grandchildren, Michael and Katherine Vizzone, Amanda, James Jr., and Peter Couch; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Hammond; brother, Raymond Wilson; sister, Lorene Hargrove; and her parents.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, September 22 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Rd.), Barrington. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 23 at St. Michael Episcopal Church, 647 Dundee Ave., Barrington. Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Palatine, following the service.
