2012 Outlook - Where do we go from here?

2012 Outlook - Where do we go from here?

This year began optimistically as markets responded to the growing sense that we were solidly on a path to economic recovery. Moving smartly to post-crisis highs in the spring, the markets were strong enough to rebound from the tragic tsunami and earthquake that hit Japan in March. But, as spring faded so did the markets as the European debt crisis took center stage in the form of Greece. Anxiety grew through the summer thanks to the political gridlock around our debt ceiling, the S&P rating downgrade of the U.S. that followed and finally an escalation in the European sovereign debt crisis. Along the way, renewed fears of a double-dip recession weighed heavily on the stock market.

As we move closer to year-end, markets have stabilized a bit due largely to a growing sense that European Union leaders are beginning to take the steps necessary to address debt troubles of member countries.

With 2011 about to enter the history books, we need to turn our attention to 2012 and what it may hold for us.  When we reflect back on the year that was, we are reminded of an eternal truth—The future will always surprise us. In spite of that, it is nevertheless a critical exercise to think about the year ahead, what shape it may take and how to position ourselves properly given that view.
