Inverness Fire Leaves Home Uninhabitable, Three Pets Killed

A passerby reported seeing smoke at the two-story home at 124 Poteet Avenue in Inverness. The owner was not home at the time of the fire, but three cats died before being reached by firefighters.

Palatine Rural Fire Department responded to a house fire in Inverness late morning Wednesday that left the home uninhabitable.

Captain Ed McGarry said a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the windows of the two-story home at 124 Poteet Avenue at 11:27 a.m. The fire, which was extinguished by 11:45 a.m. is believed to have orginated in the kitchen.

"Most of the contents of the home were damaged by water, smoke and fire, but we were able to confine it to the first floor," McGarry said.

Since the area is unhydranted, McGarry said, additional assistance was requested and received from Palatine Fire Deparment, and engines from Buffalo Grove, Rolling Meadows, Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Hoffman Estates and Barrington fire departments.

The homeowner was at work at the time of the fire, and returned home after the fire had been extinguished and before firefighters had left the scene. Three cats living in the home did not survive.

McGarry said the female owner will be staying with family living nearby.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and damage estimates were not immediately available.
