Police Blotter: Senior Citizen Nearly Scammed

Reports from the Barrington Police Department for Oct. 6

The following incidents and arrests were reported by the Barrington Police Department:

An 89-year-old man received a phone call from a person claiming to be his grandson on Oct 6.  The person on the phone told the victim that he was in Canada and had been arrested for possession of cannabis.  He then asked the victim to wire him $5,200 to post bond.

According to the police report, the scam artist told the victim not to call his parents, and to go to Western Union to send the money to Haiti.  Once at the Western Union, an employee of the facility told the man that something didn't seem right.  The victim did not send the money, and later found out his grandson was not the person who placed the call.
