Smoke Detector Battery Giveaway Saturday

Get free smoke detector batteries from the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District in Inverness from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (BCFPD) officials will distribute free smoke detector batteries to residents from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 9, at the entrance of the Braymore Hills of Inverness subdivision. It is located on the east side of Barrington Road, just south of Dundee Road.

The event is part of an ongoing public information initiative to encourage people to change the batteries in their smoke detectors when changing the clocks each spring and fall.

"Smoke detectors are proven life-saving tools that reduce the risk of fire death by 50%, but they have to be operational to be effective," said BCFPD Fire Chief/Administrator Jeff Swanson. "The battery giveaway is designed to make sure our residents have what they need to be safe in their homes."

Chief Swanson recommends replacing detector batteries twice per year and testing each home’s detectors once per month, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly two-thirds of reported home fire deaths across the country occur in situations where there are no working smoke detectors.
