Barrington Residents Prepare To Vote In Upcoming General Election

Barrington residents will see a variety of races on their ballots in the 2010 Illinois general election.

In a few weeks, Barrington residents will help elect leaders for several offices, including U.S. Representative for the Eighth Congressional District and Illinois Governor.  

The Eighth District stretches across many of the northwestern suburbs and several northern suburbs near the Illinois/Wisconsin border. 

Democrat Melissa Bean, a Barrington resident, has held the office since Jan. 4, 2004.  She is serving her second term as the Eighth District's U.S. representative.  Republican Joe Walsh and Green Party candidate Bill Scheurer are her challengers.

Statewide, Illinois residents will have their first opportunity to elect a replacement for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.  Gov. Pat Quinn has held the office since January of 2009, when Blagojevich was impeached for corruption and misconduct in office. 

Quinn, a Democrat, is running against Republican Bill Brady, Green Party candidate Rich Whitley, Libertarian Lex Green and Independent candidate Scott Lee Cohen.

The Barrington community will also be voting on U.S. senator, attorney general, secretary of state and a variety of other statewide political seats on election day. There are several Lake and Cook County seats up for grabs, including Cook County board president and Lake County clerk. 

Early voting begins Oct. 12 and runs through Oct. 28. Polls open at 6 a.m. Nov. 2.
