State Reps McSweeney and Mitchell to Speak at Barrington High School

The two will discuss issues of concern to teens on April 3.

 

Wednesday, April 3, Barrington High School students will welcome Illinois Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) for a discussion with a fellow lawmaker about regional and state legislative topics. Approximately 300 students from speech, debate and government classes will be in the audience. School officials are also opening the program to members of the community and other organizations. 

"As a graduate of Barrington High School, it will be good to be back and talk to this generation of Broncos about government and public service," said McSweeney. "Our state faces significant challenges and I want to talk with and learn about the issues that concern our teens ans future college graduates."

Illinois Rep. Chrisian Michael (D-Chicago) will join McSweeney for this student-focused, non-partisan discussion. Both lawmakers will be on stage from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will allow time for questions. 

Mitchell represents Illinois' 26th legislative district, which encompasses portions of Chicago's Near North Side Streeterville community, as well as parts of the Loop, Oakland, Grand Boulevard, Kenwood, Hyde Park, South Shore and South Chicago neighborhoods. First elected in 2012, Mitchell is the youngest active member of the Illinois General Assembly.

McSweeney and Mitchell hope to highlight and speak about the legislative process, education, school programs, higher education, suburban and urban issues, and any matter relating to Illinois finances. 

"Two very influential legislators want to hear about issues of concern to students," said Barrington 220 Superintendent Tom Leonard. "This will be a meaningful discussion and we are privileged to welcome representatives McSweeney and Mitchell to Barrington High School."
