Veterans of Foreign Wars Celebrates 65 Years

It’s been 65 years since Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7706 was chartered in the village of Barrington on June 6, 1946. The Village Board commemorated the group’s 65th anniversary when trustees met on June 13.

Trustee Jim Daluga read the proclamation written and signed by Village President Karen Darch.

“The VFW Post 7706 served our country again by supporting the troops or defending our freedom and remembers their fallen comrades in funerals and patriotic holidays,” the proclamation states. “Be it further resolved that the village of Barrington Board of Trustees offers its sincere appreciation to the VFW Post 76 to its vital contribution to the Barrington community.”

World War II veteran and VFW member Burnell Wollar took the podium to officially accept the proclamation and said a few words on behalf of the group.

“I’d like to thank the Village President Karen Darch and the trustees of the village of Barrington, because as you know, without your support we would have not existed for these 65 years,” Wollar said.

Wollar went on to thank the residents of Barrington and the surrounding communities for their support over the last 65 years. Wollar said community support has helped the VFW to support all veterans, which is a goal of the organization.

“We have dedicated ourselves from Day One to their (all veterans) support and to the village of Barrington,” Wollar said.

The crowd and the Village Board gave the VFW members a standing ovation as Wollar left the podium.
