Village Welcomes New Bike & Pedestrian Advisory Committee

A group of residents were appointed to the new committee at the July 18 Board of Trustees meeting.

After more than a year of discussion and planning, the village of Barrington has formed and appointed members of a brand new Bike & Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

The idea for the committee began during the village’s 2010 neighborhood meetings last year. The meetings were held to get ideas and feedback from community members on updating the village’s Comprehensive Plan, which is revamped every 10 years.

A major update to the 2010 plan included the formation of the Bike & Pedestrian Advisory Committee at the request of both residents and the plan commission.

“Pedestrian and bikeway connectivity was certainly the strongest interest that we heard among our residents,” Development Planner Brooke Jones said at an April Village Board meeting.

In the June village newsletter, those interested in joining the committee were asked to submit their name and resume for consideration. After interviewing eligible applicants, the board decided to appoint a committee of 11 people with two additional nonvoting members representing Barrington Park District and the Barrington 220 School District. Those appointments were approved at the July 18 Village Board meeting.

“Since I’ve been on the board, there’s been a lot of continuing and escalating interest in the Bike and Pedestrian Committee,” Trustee Beth Raseman said. “I was really glad to see that this actually came to fruition and also the really strong outpouring of interest from all different citizens from all over the community.”

Village President Karen Darch agreed with Raseman’s sentiments, and thanked those who took interest in the community’s bike and pedestrian needs.

“We are thankful for those who’ve stepped forward and we’re happy that those people have agreed to serve,” Darch said.
