Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Offers Diabetes Health Clinic

The statistics are alarming. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the National Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Diabetes affects nearly 26 million people in the United States.

 

Barrington, IL – The statistics are alarming.  According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the National Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Diabetes affects nearly 26 million people in the United States. This accounts for greater than 8% of the US population.  It is estimated that 7% of the US population is currently undiagnosed and yet another 79 million Americans ages 20 and older have Pre-Diabetes.

Diabetes is a condition that requires close monitoring and management and has many related co-morbidities such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, and nerve damage.  Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital has been addressing the diabetes epidemic over the years through community screenings, education, and awareness. Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital’s Diabetes Care Center is now taking it to the next level by offering regular community-based screenings.

Participants will be evaluated on their diabetes risks. Based on identified needs, they will be counseled by a nurse, dietitian, or physician with instructions on follow-up. Participants will also be offered tools to better manage their diabetes. In order for participants to monitor their progress these community clinics will be conducted on a regular basis throughout Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital’s service area.

 

The first Diabetes Health Clinic will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 8 am to noon at the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Outpatient Center, 525 Congress Parkway, Crystal Lake.  The cost is $10 and will include a finger stick blood glucose level (12-hour fast is required) and an A1C level. Also, participants may have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with Dr. Daniel So, Endocrinologist, and the diabetes educators from the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital Diabetes Care Center.
