Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital is sponsoring the Shepherd’s Flock team for the Barrington Relay for Life event on June 10. The team is raising money to fight cancer and will be walking all night to support the American Cancer Society. The event will run from 6 p.m. June 10 until 6 a.m. June 11 at Barrington High School Stadium, 616 W Main St., Barrington, Ill.

This year, the Barrington Relay’s theme is Barrington’s Biggest Birthday Party and organizers are attempting to set a world record by gathering 15,000 cupcakes into a 7-foot-tall tower.

In the time leading up to the relay, Good Shepherd has hosted multiple fundraising events. One of the most popular among the staff is an event called “PolypMan,” where members of the Good Shepherd staff donate money to vote for an executive or physician. The winner spends a day at the hospital dressed as PolypMan, a superhero dedicated to fighting cancer.

Shepherd’s Flock team captain Kathy Hendrix noted the positive impact the relay has on Good Shepherd staff and those personally touched by cancer.

“The staff members get to see their patients, see how well they’re doing and get to celebrate with them,” she said. “It’s brought so many different people together.”

Good Shepherd and the Shepherd’s Flock team have participated for over a decade and raise thousands of dollars each year.
