BHS Code Red Students Bring Valentine Cheer to Preschoolers

Teens provide service and leadership.

The Code Red Leadership Club of students from visited the Barrington 220 (ELC) for Valentine's Day, to help preschoolers with crafts, singing and other activities. The high school students have visited ELC in the past and the children looked forward to their return accoring to ELC Principal Barb Romano. BHS students were eager to return as well and consider the ELC project as one of the most fun things they do.

"ELC is a blast," said senior Jake Bujnowski

"It's a way to give back to all the different aspects of the community. We're connecting the dots by bringing together different parts of the community," said Emily Hirsch, a senior in the club. She said previous visits to the Early Learning Center inspired her to choose psychology as her college major.

Senior Mark Plescia said he became involved in Code Red because all of his peers whom he looked up to were in the club. "I saw they were making a difference and I wanted to emulate what they did," he said.

Teacher Mitch Beck said Code Red consists of 30 students. The teens determine their own projects. Recently they set up a 3-on-3 basketball tournament with the proceeds going to support Brothers Keeper, a BHS club in which students travel to a Sioux Indian reservation in South Dakota for a service project.
