Death of Local First Grader Sparks Health Speculations

The Barrington-area is mourning the loss of Student Brianna Renteria.

The first grade student died suddenly last week at a local hospital after battling an illness for several days.

Her doctors believe complications from the flu may have aggravated an unknown heart condition that contributed to her death.

“Her unexpected death and her funeral this morning have been understandably emotional for her family, her classmates and the staff at her school. Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to the close-knit and caring Sunny Hill community, which is still grappling with the passing of such a young child,” read an email from District 220 Superintendent Dr. Tom Leonard.

The Sunny Hill community wanted to do something to honor her memory, and built “Brianna’s Reading Garden” with donations from non-profit organization “Teens for Teens.”

“They wanted to do something in her memory and when you experience a loss of a child so young it affects a lot of people in the community. They wanted to work together and they sought funding from an outside organization that enabled them to create a garden in her memory,” said Chief Communications Officer Jeff Arnett.

Since Renteria’s passing, there has been speculation in the community that her death was caused by some sort of contagious illness passing through the school. The Kane County Health Department has reported that not to be true.

“The health department worked with the family and the doctors last week. They appear to have ruled out any type of virus or communicable disease,” Arnett explained.

Sunny Hill Principal Irma Bates composed a letter to families with some important information to keep your child healthy.

“The well-being of every student and staff member in our schools is paramount, as is accurate communication - especially following a tragedy such as this. I know you share this concern as well as my continued condolences to the family, friends and teachers of Brianna Renteria,” Leonard said.
